Cartoon Brew will regularly update this page with information about the contenders in the Oscar animation categories of the 88th annual Academy Awards, which will be held on February 28, 2016.

These films which have been (or will be) released in 2015 have generated positive buzz and/or reviews, some on the festival circuit and some in wide release. Whether all of them will be submitted for Academy qualification remains to be seen, but we consider them to be the strongest current contenders for the animated feature Academy Award. The films are listed alphabetically, and the list will be updated periodically.

There are numerous ways to qualify in the animated short category of the Oscar. One of the primary ways of doing so is to win specific awards at one of the Academy’s qualifying festivals (see PDF). The qualifying period to win an award at one of these festivals runs from October 1, 2014 through September 30, 2015. The films are listed alphabetically, and the list will be updated periodically.
