I would give good money for a tape of the Orange Bowl halftime show that featured aliens on the verge of taking over the Earth until they were defeated by the Flintstones.

I remember this. But as for worst H-B production ever, I nominate “Roast Of The Superfriends.”
Was this ever really considered to be entertainment? I mean, was anyone actually ever entertained watching anything like this?
Well that was an interesting find. The Jabberjaw costume looked pretty funny. Especially when he was about to eat Roy Clark ala the ’shark’ skit from ‘SNL’. I guess Frank Welker was too busy to voice Jabberjaw for the program, so they got Don Messick instead.

Buck Owens on HEE HAW instead of trading barbs with a talking
shark (Jabberjaw). LOL
Unsettling.
That must have cost a lot of money. What year was it made?
There was also the live action, half hour “Jokebook”, originally titled “J.B.’s Jokebook”, that ran briefly around the same time. It was hosted by two female puppets named Honey and Sis and co-produced by Harry Love. This H-B production made Sid and Marty Krofft look like Martin Scorcese and David Lean.

At the 3:45 mark, “Oh, this is terribly embarrassing. Please forgive us…” It’s out of context but very funny.
Revisiting 1970’s H-B reminds me why The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Hour was the ONLY show I watched on Saturday mornings.

I’ve had this memory of renting this from a video store when I was little, and have never been able to find anything about it online.
I’m curious. Why the ice? Was there an ice capades like show featuring HB characters? Was this a link to that?
…or was this one of those seventies things, like the Brady Bunch (or was it Donny and Marie?) with a swimming pool on set?
In any case: awful.
…but a fun awful, a I can’t look away or belive this is happening awful.
I thought challange of the super heroes and it’s roast better than this…but neither are good things.

Wow! It’s Hanna Barbera’s equivalent of the “Star Wars Holiday Special”!
This reminds me a lot of another special I saw as a kid. It was hosted by Soupy Sales instead of Roy Clark, because Soupy had a live action Saturday morning show at the time, but the walkaround costumes were all the same. In this Thanksgiving special, Soupy and the HB walkarounds chased after this turkey walkaround all around some amusement park.
So was everybody in a fierce competition to out lame the Star Wars Holiday Special and the Brady Variety Show back in the bad ol’ days?
Wow. This truly is the worst thing HB ever produced, and that’s saying something!
I probably would have LOVED this when I was a kid… LOL.
That’s a great time capsule of largely extinct television practices…
-the obviously phony laugh track
-the one-off variety special
-celebrity hosts who are WAY out of their element
I’m sure there are more but I didn’t get past the first 4 minutes or so.
I’d be most curious to know what the ratings were for that. Probably numbers that TV execs would kill for today.

I am pretty sure HB ran a number of Ice Shows through out the 1970’s. So this show was probably very cheap and easy to produce with the skaters and routines already set up. We have the same kind of horrible kids entertainment today with shows like the Wiggles and Barney.
I never liked Jabberjaw, but “no respect” is right! You know they didn’t put much thought into this from the get-go when you realize that all of these characters are claiming to be “friends” with Fred Flintstone. First of all, Jabberjaw lived in the FUTURE, right? And those other characters were generally shown to live in the present. So that’s a stretch to begin with. But Fred lived in the Stone age, so why would they all even be aware of his existence? Not to mention that not one of those characters would last 5 minutes in the town of Bedrock before being turned into food, clothing or home appliances ! Hey, Snagglepuss! Watch out! They say real (cave) men wear pink!
This is the epitome of corrupt entertainment made by cheap souls.
I didn’t watch the whole thing, but I doubt this little Icecapade is what I’m remembering. Long, long ago, I saw a show that I recall being a celebration/retrospective of Hanna & Barbera where some human host spoke to the camera, while suited critters (were they the Banana Splits?) gave him notes. At the very end, the Splits started to panic and fleet the room. A large monster emerged and consumed the human host. It blasted steam from trumpet-like horns and somewhere Fred Flintstone cried out “Yabba-dabba-do!”
Anyone else remember that, or was it all just a part of a fever dream?

There is clearly a temporal anomaly going on here. Did the ice arena somehow fall through a time-space continuum, travel millions of years in the past and land in Bedrock just to have this special?

To Benjamin: that was an HB anniversary special from around ‘82 or ‘83 (25th?) that was hosted by Bill Bixby.
Stuff like this is just one more reason they put the Simpsons on postage stamps and not the Flintstones.

This is even more bizarre than the Paul Lynde Halloween Special. Except that the Lynde special was bizarre and unintentionally funny while this is just plain bad.
I just want to come clean and admit that I truly miss 1970s Variety Shows. They were uniformly cheesy, but infinitely-more-entertaining than “People Eat Bugs and Scream at Each Other” and “I’m Rich and Stupid”. The Paul Lynde Halloween Special DVD is one of my prized possessions.
Yes, this show is silly and is far from an example of the best that the Variety Show produced. Still, it’s fun and refreshingly free of maliciousness.
You may all proceed to make fun of me. I’m going to go watch some Pink Lady and Jeff.

Talking about variety shows, how about those wacky Summer Replacement Shows that briefly thrived around the gap between Laugh-In and Saturday Night Live? They even had animated bumpers and other padding. Not to mention various knock-offs of those stop-mo carless motorists from Stop, Look, & Listen.
One of these was the prime time predecessor of the Saturday morning Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Hour.
I’ve treid to watch this the last few days and the video keeps clogging…but I get the idea.
Benjamin, I don’t remember this specifically or was even unaware of some kind of HB ice series but I do remember a Flinstones on Ice special with costumed characters voiced by their voices.
Gotta say the animation I did see here was pretty good. The backgrounds; a little too good guachey detailed compared to the series.

I remember seeing the H.R. Pufnstuf-themed Ice Capades, and I think one with the Peanuts characters. Didn’t see Banana Splits on ice though.

On the opening title, they should have used “Revue”, not “Review”. They made the same mistake as on the Blue Ribbon of “Book Revue” (1945).
Holy crow! I remember watching this (or possibly another installment of it more focused on Scooby-Doo) as a kid and being TRANSFIXED by it, mostly for the thrill of see the H-B characters live. When it was over I cried because I wanted to watch it again and had missed the 1st half (oh, the days before VHS mass penetration).
