We’re sticking around in the Thirties today for the Van Beuren short Pals (aka Christmas Night) starring Soglow’s The Little King. A creepy Santa and two hobos complete the package. Jim Tyer animated on this film as well.

thank YOO!! I always loved its score. Him being mute made the entire film so musical….and lilting!! A great treat! A great score!

…I dunno, kids. That halfway point image in that clip just seems…wrong. :-P

Wow, this cartoon is slightly creepy. When I was a kid I guess I just assumed that the king was a hairy kid that just invited the hobos over for a slumber party waiting for Santa. . . But now watching it, I see an adult king just grab a couple of guys off the street and straight off they stripe off their clothes for a bath party. It’s amazing the things you don’t see when your vision is clouded by innocents. ;)

I love these old cartoons. Please keep them coming!

This was a cartoonseries of The Little King. Van Beuren licensed the comic-strip the Little King from Otto Soglow. The Little King was first published in The New Yorker in 1931.

The Jam Handy logo on the end title card must have come from some other film, no?

Too bad you couldn’tna done a 31 Days of Animated Christmas! There’s 5 billion (old) yuletide toons….all of which are an absolute joy! (Most of ‘em, anyway!) Any special faves out there??

Uncle Wayne: “Any special faves out there?”

I’m partial to The Snowman (Raymond Briggs) and the Richard Williams version of A Christmas Carol. And I have fond memories of Jimminy Cricket singing “From All of Us to All of You”.

Um, why is the tattooed hobo wearing a bra?

Thanks Amid! Driving the cars through the castle was really funny!

Is it just me or was the bubble used to show how drunk they were? I really got the vibe that they were all drunk and sneaking around like kids because of the alcohol. And the bubble carried through the rest of the show so I’m assuming that’s what it meant.

Not as surreal as the Fleischer cartoons of the time, but zany nonetheless. Any chance a Fleischer Xmas cartoon will be one of the last 5 Twelve Animated Days of Christmas toons?

The bubble was cuz he swallowed the tub. The bath…why is this creepy? in 1933, this would prolly not have been considered anything but saving a lot of work to fill a tub with hot water. Hundreds of romans bathed together. Good grief, does everybody automatically see the perverted of everything nowadays?

mistyped that. **He swallowed the SOAP, in the tub.
