‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ Becomes 5th Animated Film To Top Half-Billion Worldwide Since Pandemic

Universal and Dreamworks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 4 crossed the half-billion mark at the global box office last weekend. Its global total is now $503.5 million.

Since the pandemic started, only four other animated features have hit the half-billion mark at the global box office: Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train, Minions: The Rise of Gru, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Now with the Mike Mitchell-directed KFP4 joining the club, that gives Universal ownership of three of the five half-billion animation grossers in the last five years.

In its eighth U.S. weekend, KFP 4 delivered $3.5 million, good for seventh place. The film has grossed $185m domestic. The film also added $11.6m from international play last weekend, lifting its foreign total to $318.5m.

Top foreign markets for KFP4 are China ($48.5m), Mexico ($35.2m), U.K. ($24.4m), Germany ($15.8m), and Australia ($14.7m).

The four films in the Kung Fu Panda franchise have collectively grossed over $2.3 billion at the global box office, making it one of the top 10 theatrical animation franchises of all time.

Dreamworks also currently has another film in U.S. theaters: the 20th anniversary re-release of Shrek 2, which has now grossed $3.3m. It may not seem like a lot until you consider that the figure is nearly the combined gross of the three recent Disney-Pixar theatrical releases: Soul, Turning Red, and Luca.

Japan

After a stellar launch, Detective Conan: The Million-Dollar Pentagram, the 27th movie in the franchise, continued to deliver strong numbers in its third weekend, pulling in $7.8m. Its total gross in Japan is $55.6m.

The previous film in the Detective Conan series, Black Iron Submarine, is the franchise’s current highest-grosser, having earned just under $90 million in Japan last year.
