Roobarb and Custard was my favourite childhood telly programme. Gutted.

Bob Godfrey is hardly more than a name in the United States, yet he was so obviously the heart of British animation. He made animation seem so accessible, so necessary to do, that he could only have inspired. Perhaps if we had gotten Roobarb in the US, things might have turned out better for us. He was part of a small group, the Grasshopper Group, whose members included Gerry Potterton, John Daborne, Stan Hayward, Dick Williams, Derek Hill, Jim Nicolson, John Kirby, Stuart Wynn Jones, Richard Horn, Kevin Brownlow and other exciting film lovers.

I wasn’t a big fan of GREAT, but I’m pleased he won the Oscar when he did. He certainly deserved one for KAMA SUTRA RIDES AGAIN, HENRY’S CAT and many other gems. He’ll be missed.

I met Bob in 1991 at Annecy. He was a real character- sitting there in a tank top, shorts and really loud yellow runners. He remains a wonderful artist/ animator.
