This Week in LA: Gkids Animation Showcase

In conjunction with the CTN Animation Expo and Burbank Animation Week, distributor Gkids is holding an Animation Showcase this week at theaters nearby the CTN event. CTN Expo attendees will be admitted to these screenings free; the screenings are also open to the public (who will have to pay regular movie admission prices). Here’s the schedule:

Wednesday – THE RABBI’S CAT (French, Directors: Joann Sfar/ Delesvaux)- 7:30pm at the AMC Burbank 16

Thursday – THE PAINTING (French, D: Jean-Francious Laguionie) – 7:30pm at the NoHo 7

Friday – FROM UP ON POPPY HILL (Japanese, D; Goro Miyazaki) – 7:30pm at the NoHo 7

Saturday – GKIDS SURPRISE SCREENING – a top secret new release from Gkids in 2013 – 7:30pm at the NoHo 7

Saturday – A LETTER TO MOMO (Japanese, D: Hiroyuki Okiura) – 9:45pm at the NoHo 7

Sunday – ZARAFA (French, D: Rémi Bezançon, Jean-Christophe Lie) – 7:30pm at the NoHo 7

GKids will also be screening Chico and Rita (Thursday at 9:45pm); A Cat In Paris (Friday at 9:45pm); and The Secret Of Kells (Sunday at 9:45pm) at the NoHo 7 this week. This is a great opportunity to catch up with these would-be Oscar contenders – and even catch a few sneak previews of GKids releases in 2013. I will be at most showings to introduce the films. Get yourselves to see The Rabbi’s Cat.
    It’s wonderful.
The best animated feature I’ve seen in a long time.

I’ve wanted to see The Rabbi’s Cat ever since I saw the trailer ages ago.

A Letter To Momo also looks really interesting.

I caught The Painting (Le Tableau) in Annecy. It didn’t really do it for me. It looks okay in stills, but when you see it moving it’s a lot less satisfying. Plus the story and character acting a both pretty disappointing.

Nice line up. Really want to see Rabbi’s Cat – not sure if there will be any chance to do so in blighty in the coming year. Have managed to see Momo, Poppy Hill and The Painting – all highly recommended.

I sincerely wonder what that “special screening” is.
