Kanye West: I’m Just Like Vanellope von Schweetz From “Wreck-It Ralph” [UPDATED]

The much discussed Kanye West interview with Zane Lowe of the BBC has a little something for everyone—even fans of Wreck-It Ralph. During a rant about the fashion industry, West emphatically compared himself to Vanellope von Schweetz, the misunderstood female lead from last year’s Disney feature:

“It’s in my code. Have y’all ever seen Wreck-It Ralph? Remember how that girl in there—the people that was racing—she was the glitch. You tellin’ me they don’t look at me like the motherfucking glitch? You tellin’ me people don’t look at Kanye West like the glitch right now? And she was on the side of the videogame the whole time. It’s in my code.”

When the interviewer mentioned West’s critics, Kanye extended the metaphor by talking about Vanellope’s foes, who tried to keep prevent her from participating in the race by breaking her kart. “Yeah, they broke Vanellope’s car,” West responded. “Vanellope von Schweetz, they broke her car.”

Kanye’s appreciation and knowledge of animation is no secret. He commissioned indie animation director Bill Plympton to direct one of his videos, and has referenced Ralph Bakshi as the inspiration for another of his videos.

Here’s the segment queued up:

[UPDATE]: After we posted this on Twitter, a reader suggested that someone should draw Kanye as Vanellope von Schweetz. The challenge was taken up by Art Vogt:

  • Saska

He’s also a huge anime fan, Akira being his favourite.

    • Jonah Sidhom

If anyone is interested, here is his music video for ‘Stronger’ which was inspired by Akira: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsO6ZnUZI0g

      • Haruna

The Sugar Rush game in WIR also had anime influence, such as the song and the arcade box art.

  • o_o

Well at least we all know who Kanye is going as for Halloween this year.

  • Ju-osh

This is also West’s *second* Sarah Silverman-related quote in a week. In a rant directed at Jimmy Kimmel, West tweeted, “”SARAH SILVERMAN IS A THOUSAND TIMES FUNNIER THAN YOU AND THE WHOLE WORLD KNOWS IT!!!”
Good comics, good cartoons — say what you will about West, but he clearly has taste!

  • Rufus Chickenplight

He is a lot like the little girl from Wreck-It Ralph. That’s a bit of a problem for a grown man trying to push a g-style music wave.

  • Erik Butter

    Good for you Kanye…
    Good for you.

  • Wow, I never expected Kanye West to be such an animation aficionado, let alone know who Plympton and Bakshi even were. That doesn’t his statement from being pretty amusing though, even if he did make some valid points to support it.

    • SarahJesness

Yeah, I was kind of surprised to look up the music video for “Heartless” (great song, for the record) a while ago and find it was animated. And it’s rotoscoped! I guess that’s the Bakshi influence working there.

  • Dana B

He’s comparing himself to a whinny little brat? Sounds about right…

  • Ryan

he also made a video as a collaboration with Takeshi Murakami, and the bear character from the video is a pop icon used in Murakami’s work

  • Dana B

    Just joking is all :)

I know what you mean, though. It’s not everyday you hear a high profile celebrity compair themselves to an animated character without feeling ashamed about it. After all, characters are based off real people who went through the same struggles as those that they were inspired from. Heck, Wreck-it Ralph(film) as a whole is a good example of this, from being under appreciated to being bullied, it’s those themes that many can relate to.

    • SarahJesness

Bonus points for comparing himself to a cutesy little girl character. Not a lot of guys will do that.

  • Is It Ralph Tho?

    It ain’t Ralph tho.
