Mickey Mouse Short “Get a Horse!” Will Debut at Annecy

Disney announced today that they will release a ‘lost’ Mickey Mouse short called Get A Horse! featuring Walt Disney himself as the voice of Mickey Mouse. The hand-drawn short “follows Mickey, his favorite gal pal Minnie Mouse and their friends Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow as they delight in a musical wagon ride, until Peg-Leg Pete shows up and tries to run them off the road.”

The never-before-seen work will be presented at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in Annecy, France on Tuesday, June 11. Lauren MacMullan (Avatar: The Last Airbender, Wreck-It-Ralph), Dorothy McKim (Meet the Robinsons) and animator Eric Goldberg (Winnie the Pooh, Princess and the Frog, Aladdin) will be on hand to present the film.

Just in time to painfully celebrate the 2D animator layoffs.

      Oh the irony…

    • LIt

That’s been the response for every DISNEY TOUCHES A PENCIL news update we’ve had. I’m confused, do you guys want them to completely shun 2D and pretend it doesn’t exist or do you want them push a little hand-drawn animation here and there to indicate they still embrace their roots?

When a factory has layoffs, they don’t stop production because it’s “too soon”. I don’t know why anyone would think this is the case here.

    • Steve

Some 2D animators got laid off. There wasnt a project for them to work on, and they werent willing or able to animate in CG. That’s business.

      • D. Harry

Uhhhh, Nik Ranieri doesn’t do CG?? Hellllooooooooooooo!!!

        • jmahon

          chill out.

in the end, it’s not as if Disney has a monopoly on good creative movies, not anymore. The odds Nik Ranieri won’t find something great to be involved with are low.

        • Steve

If Nik wants to discuss on a public forum the reason he isnt animating in CG at Disney anymore, he’s welcome to. But I certainly wont.

A “new” dose of pure Walt (and Ub and others as well). Sounds good.

  • Sam Logan

So this is a new short using an old recording of Walt, then?

    • otterhead

That’s my guess — that this is the second of the new shorts they’ve been working on, done in a retro-30s style.

  • Greg Manwaring

If Eric animated this I look forward to seeing it!!

  • JodyMorgan

Wait, someone at Disney still knows who Horace Horsecollar is?

    Company’s hypocrisy at its best…

If they unfroze Walt for this it better be good…

  • Jules

This reads like it might be some kind of revisionist prank, with the quotation marks around “new.” Hopefully it’s an authentic archival Mickey piece with Walt’s voice and not Walt’s voice stuck onto some new piece of crap animated in Flash with a modern corporate sensibility.

You could animate traditionally in flash, it wouldn’t be any different from pencil on paper besides one is drawn on a tablet and one is drawn on paper

This is obviously a new short with some archival audio since Russi Taylor is the voice of Minnie and Walt quit doing Mickey around the time she was born.
