Dave Feiss Directs “Cloudy with A Chance of Meatballs 2″ Hand-Drawn Short “Earl Scouts”

Dave Feiss ( Cow and Chicken) directed Earl Scouts, a 2D short with CG wraparounds, as a tie-in for Cloudy with A Chance of Meatballs 2. The 2D animation was produced by 6 Point Harness. While slickly made, the humorous personalities of the film’s characters have been discarded in favor of a warmed-over Ren & Stimpy sensibility. Officer Earl is unmistakably modeled on George Liquor, minus the necessary timing that makes the latter character funny, and pickle and strawberry have obtained the generic over-the-top expressions of countless other post-R&S characters. The ‘dry brush’ rendering of pickle and strawberry is an attractive design choice, but the characters’ personalities and humor pales in comparison to the feature film.

Yeah, it’s George Liquor with 2 Wile E. Coyotes, but it is gorgeous, though….really cool to see really cartoony fully animated characters that have as much detail as the backgrounds. It’s like an animated Goldenbook.

I love Spumco and all, but it would be great if there was more stuff that didn’t automatically remind me of Ren and Stimpy humor wise just for the sake of variety and trying stuff that hasn’t been done much in animation.

Eh, that’s par for the course with David Feiss. I liked the cartoon OK, but the pseudo-Krikfalusi vibe pegs it as a Feiss short right off the bat.

When I read the desc, I was ready to call bulldonk, but dammit if that Earl guy isn’t EXACTLY like George Liquor. I’m assuming that this is probably just a slide-in homage from a bored animator forced to work on manufactured cartoon feature film department’s DVD extras.

I like it, the relish joke alone makes this worth it!

Earl even uses the John K. finger.
