“This Land Is Mine” By Nina Paley

It’s been a while since we’ve seen new animation from Nina Paley, director of one of the finest animated features of the past decade, Sita Sings the Blues. She released This Land is Mine yesterday. The short offers “a brief history of the land called Israel/Palestine/Canaan/the Levant.”

Nina envisioned the piece as the last scene of her feature film project Seder-Masochism. The status of the feature is unclear, but at least we have this stand-alone short complete with a convenient guide to who’s killing who.

  • Amazing! I’m so glad Nina Paley is doing this. Go Nina! :D

  • Nice job. An extension on “Peace on Day” with the answer at the end.

  • nice work
and you can’t Whack a bit of Andy Williams either (RIP big fella)

  • Daniel J. Drazen

Nina Paley HAS to finish “Seder-Masochism.” You can’t let a great name like that go to waste!

    *who’s killing whom.

    • Daniel J. Drazen

Everybody’s killing everybody. It’s the Middle East. We’ve got Assyrians, Egyptians, Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Jews, Arabs, European Crusaders, the British, Palestinians. One of the great things about Paley’s animation is that the players are recognizable if you have a bit of history under your belt.

This is one example of a soundtrack that belongs to David Lynch re-contextualized material with eerie subtext, it plays against the “flat” look of the graphic quality of the animation (which is beautiful in its own right) Christian right lyrics by Pat BOONE, vocals by Andy Williams, Quincy Jones studio… Hollyweird politics at its back-slapping best.

    • Chris Sobieniak

I remember thinking the same way (though for me, it was listening to The Duprees’ cover of the tune), I’m glad Nina Paley made it happen!

  • Joe Horne

slashing bodies in synch to soundtrack…..MORE!!!

  • bob kurtz

    BRILLIANT !!!!!!!!

  • christy

that is fucking amazing! gave me chills!
    so good!

  • Great to watch new work by Nina Paley again! This controversial topic rarely was dealt with so elegantly.

  • John A

We’ve wasted so many centuries fighting over this stupid plot of “magic dirt”, we’re not going to be happy until it ends up like the final shot in “Duck Dodgers”. People can be so stupid.

  • Gerard de Souza

    Brilliant! And timely!

  • Tom Cushwa

Andy Williams RIP. This is amazing work. Entertaining disturbing and thought provoking!

  • Paul M

I want Nina and Genndy Tartakovsky to have a baby and name him Walter Chuck Paley Tartakovsky, and raise him in an animation studio.

    Unfortunately Genndy’s wife may object.

Nina, you are brilliant, God bless.

Never been a huge fan of Nina’s work, and this hasn’t swayed my position drastically in one direction or the other. Great concept, though. Really like what she was trying to do here.

  • Niki Sam

Nina work is amazing and I show her work to all my students and try to encourage them to get their parents to go out and buy her work!

  • Tomm

    Great stuff!
