Nickelodeon Is Making An ‘Invader Zim’ Movie (UPDATED)

Nickelodeon and Invader Zim creator Jhonen Vasquez are working together to create an Invader Zim made-for-TV movie.

The news was leaked today on the Tumblr account of Harvey Beaks creator C.H. Greenblatt, who you may recall from another big story a couple days ago. When asked by a fan if he would work with Vasquez on an Invader Zim movie, Greenblatt responded, “Jhonen IS making an Invader Zim movie for Nick. I’m not a part of it, but I’m excited.”

Nickelodeon is also working on made-for-TV movies for other vintage series, including Hey Arnold!, scheduled for release in 2017, and Rocko’s Modern Life, with an unscheduled release date.

Vasquez has not yet publicly commented on the movie, but some of his recent tweets, like the following, could possibly be referencing the project:

UPDATE #2: Nickelodeon officially announced the Invader Zim movie on April 4, 2017.

UPDATE #1: Greenblatt has deleted his post from Tumblr. Here is a screenshot of it:

After we published our story, Jhonen Vasquez denied on Twitter that he is developing an Invader Zim movie. However, as we learned a couple days ago, Nickelodeon forces its creators to go on the Internet and lie to their fans. In other words, we’re sticking to our story.

Here’s Vasquez’s official “denial”:

  • Slim Cognito

Oooh. Zim ended on a massive cliffhanger so I’m really excited. Jhonen said the original arc he had in mind was Zim coming to love Earth.

    • SomeCallMeKash

Kind of a copout but I’ll take it

    • Val

Steven Universe already did it! Haha. :)

    • Medic von Medic

When did he say that? Back when the series actually ended and scripts and ideas were released, it pretty much had all the Irkens getting destroyed and Dib at the head of it having adventures in space with the Resisty and the Meekrob. I mean, I say this as someone whose favorite character was always Zim so I wasn’t quite thrilled.

  • Kwert

Interestingly, Jhonen is denying this on Twitter. I wonder if he’s just trying to keep some mystery around it or if this is really just a rumor?

    • olivia

Nickelodeon forces them to keep it a secret to avoid bad rumors. It said it in the article.

  • Val
    • AmidAmidi

Nickelodeon, as we learned just two days ago, forces it creators to lie on the Internet. Something you may want to keep in mind.

      • Val

That is fair. But, with what Jhonen has been saying for years at this point about not wanting to do this exact thing — I’m skeptical! Either way, can’t wait to see what he puts out next, it’s always a good time.

      • Fried

But does Nickelodeon force online journalists to keep making articles about one’s Tumblr posts and Tweets without proper research?

      • siskavard

Vasquez doesn’t seem like the type to be told what to say by anyone. I don’t buy it.

        • AmidAmidi

So what is Greenblatt excited about? Did he just dream an Invader Zim movie or is he lying to his fans about other creators’ shows?

          • Fried

Could have been a mistake. Could have been that he thought Vasquez was there for ZIM but was there for something else, he did work on the TNMT short. Could have overheard a conversation and misunderstood. Could have even made the entire post just as a test to see if CartoonBrew would literally post anything he says. Could have been literally a multitude of things. But he took down the post because people on Twitter were harassing Vasquez over wide-spread “confirmed” speculation and I’m more incline to listen to the word of the creator, Vasquez, who says there is no movie than Greenblatt who only passes by him in the hallways and probably doesn’t have a big insight on non-Harvey Beaks related productions.

Not to mention Vasquez has already turned down the offer to continue the series years ago and is currently supervising the comic instead because he prefers that format. I’m not sure why you are taking a third-party’s Tumblr post as word-of-God.

          • siskavard

Misinformation? I don’t know either of these guys & I’ve never worked for Nickelodeon. It’s none of my business, but I guess it makes for great, hard-hitting, investigative journalism.

  • KD

I would commit crime for this to happen, any crimes will do

  • Zim 2020

Zim for President! He would be better than Trump.

    • Minato Arisato

      We’d all be dead.

  • I don’t think matters if Nick forces it’s creators to lie or not. I think any network would’ve wanted the people involved to stay quiet until an official announcement is made. Though in Vasquez’s case, I think he may have been trying a little too hard to keep it under wraps. Unless he actually is telling the truth and Greenblatt lied for some reason.

  • Person man

Does this mean we might get I feel Sick number 3?

    • Bob

?Personally I think I Feel sick ended really well but it’s still my favorite of his work.

  • Well, it does make sense. Vasquez has been out of work ever since Disney bought and shelved his and Jenny Goldberg’s project Very Important House.

    • Bill Agans

No, he hasn’t. He’s doin’ the Invader Zim comics.

  • liz

This is extremely stupid because my aunt used to sit down with me and we would watch invader zim every night until I was supposed to go to bed. this upsets me a whole lot. :(

  • Tell me when they make The Angry Beavers Magnum Opus/Bye Bye Beavers

  • Mister Twister

So, with all the old IPs getting closure, how long until……….. Storm Hawks season 3?

  • David Ferrer

How could you not make an Invader Zim movie? it’s like the best cartoon ever.

  • So I assume that Nickelodeon is rewriting the policy at their network in regards to social media activity for their creatives?

  • Karl

Concluding that Jhonen Vasquez is lying about an Invader Zim movie because Nick forced the creator of Harvey Beaks to lie doesn’t make any sense. That might be the case, but you’re presenting it in the light of a fact when it’s just, at best, a guess at the moment. The Greenblatt source and Vasquez’s earlier tweet holds much more credibility.

Nick has to know what a goldmine iz is. Hell I’ve spent a small fortune on iz merch. And whenever I wear a shirt anywhere I get loads of people stopping me to tell me they love my shirt.

  • TheGlynreaper

really I dont understand why nickelodeon would get him to change his post as the movie will create hype and the more hype would mean more people will watch it plus to cash in more nickelodeon could create invader zim merchandise including action figures including one of professor membrane

  • Heather Fennell

I’m a big Invader Zim fan….i would love to see a movie but honestly I’m not going to get my hopes up until I hear and see it for myself…you can’t believe everything you read on the internet

  • Andy Teal

    “Vintage?” Really?
