The 24 Hours: Animation Contest for Students wrapped earlier this month, doling out prizes to teams from schools from around the world that were able to produce some seriously impressive 30-second animated films in under 24 hours.

Celebrating its 21st edition this year, 24 Hours is led by Aubry Mintz, an animation professor at California State University, Long Beach. The free-to-enter event is open to teams of five from high schools and universities around the world. This year’s prompt provided to artists read:

In 24 hours, make a 30-second film showing us the potential of animated filmmaking as a thank you to our incredible art form. This is a call to arms! A celebration! A love letter to animation! Show us how animation, at its very nature, has properties that can be explored in ways that no other medium has. From art direction to movement to unique design and subjective storytelling – use all of the elements animation has at its disposal to show us what makes it such a powerful and creative medium.

Films are posted weekly on the contest’s Youtube channel; this year’s winners can be seen in the video posted below.

The 2023 24 Hours contest hosted a record 431 teams from 104 schools in 23 countries. Ninety colleges and 14 high schools entered, including a team from Exceptional Minds, an art school for young autistic adults and artists on the autism spectrum.

Industry support was especially robust this year, with key sponsors offering prizes to students valued at more than $165,000. Seven teams eventually won prize packs which included cash, swag bags, art books, software, drawing tablets, event passes, and more.

Winners from this year’s event were selected by a jury that included director and storyboard artist Evally Owo Aguila (Star Wars Galaxy of Creatures), animator Alex Smeaton (Star Trek: Lower Decks), writer-director Sam de Ceccatty (Lilith & Eve), illustrator and animator Wilma Miranda (Atención Atención), and story and layout artist Derrick Malik Johnson (Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur).
