Kid's & Family Emmys 2022 Kid's & Family Emmys 2022

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) has unveiled the nominees for the first-ever Children’s & Family Emmy Awards, taking place on Saturday, December 10 (creative arts) and Sunday, December 11, at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles. Many of the honors at this new awards show were previously handed out as part of the Daytime Emmys.

This won’t be news to anyone who works in animation, but according to the Academy, children’s and family content has seen the most growth among all its recognized categories with a 23% increase in output over the past two years. This first edition of the Children’s & Family Emmys received close to 3,000 submissions, making it the largest competition that NATAS oversees.

“Putting a spotlight on children’s and family programming after years of unparalleled growth in content quality and quantity in this space is an exciting moment for the television industry,” said Adam Sharp, president and CEO, NATAS. “These programs entertain, inform and educate family members of all ages, and NATAS is proud to mark this milestone event and give these creators the stage they deserve.”

Netflix walked away with four of the most nominated titles among animated series and specials, with Maya and the Three scoring five nominations and City of Ghosts, Hilda and the Mountain King, and Go! Go! Cory Carson notching four each. Disney+’s Luca short Ciao Alberto also got four nominations.

Netflix was also the top-nominated animation platform or network overall, acquiring 46 nominations from the categories which featured animated programming. (For our methodology, we’ve counted all of the animation and vfx categories, as well as hybrid categories and those featuring live-action content with extensive animation sequences.)

Following in a distant second place was Disney, which pulled 27 nominations between its channels and the Disney+ platform. After another major drop, Warner Bros. Discovery notched eight combined nominations between HBO, HBO Max, Cartoon Network, and Boomerang.
