Everything is bigger in Texas, even when it comes to the smallest films. The Fort Worth Film Commission is expanding a unique initiative to help independent short filmmakers qualify for the Oscars.
It’s the kind of program we might expect to see in Europe, but one that is sorely needed in the U.S. and that we can really get behind.

The commission has opened applications for its 2026 Premiere Package, a program that provides selected short films with a complimentary seven-day theatrical run in Fort Worth, Texas, satisfying one of the Academy’s key eligibility requirements for the animated, live-action, and documentary short film categories. Applications are open to filmmakers worldwide through July 15 (sorry for the short notice; we just found out about the program).
The program is available to narrative, animated, and documentary shorts that have not yet qualified for Academy Awards consideration but otherwise meet the Academy’s eligibility rules. While the Fort Worth Film Commission handles theatrical exhibitions, filmmakers remain responsible for submitting their films to the Academy after completing their qualifying runs.
Far more than just meeting minimum requirements, the program’s package includes daily screenings for seven consecutive days at Texas Movie Bistro, a red-carpet premiere event, promotional support, professional photography, and printed poster materials. For filmmakers able to attend, the commission also covers airfare for up to two cast or crew members, hotel accommodation for up to four nights, local transportation, and a guided tour of Fort Worth.
Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee led by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Brandon Oldenburg, with four projects chosen each year.
The initiative builds on Fort Worth’s emergence as an Oscar-qualifying market after the Academy added the Dallas-Fort Worth region to its list of qualifying theatrical markets in 2024, making it one of only a handful of places in the U.S. where a one-week theatrical engagement can satisfy the Academy’s exhibition requirement for short films.
The program has already produced tangible results. Among the inaugural recipients was The Pearl Comb, which used its Fort Worth qualifying run before advancing to the Academy Awards shortlist, demonstrating that the initiative can provide independent filmmakers with a viable path toward Oscar consideration.
