Artemis Fowl is set for another screen adaptation; only this time, Disney will animate the popular literary IP.
The company has greenlit a new series based on Eoin Colfer’s bestselling fantasy books for Disney Channel and Disney+, with the author attached to executive produce the project.
In fact, Colfer announced the project himself during a 25 Years of Artemis Fowl panel at New York Comic Con. The first novel in the series was published in 2001, and the franchise has since sold more than 35 million copies worldwide and been translated into 48 languages.
The books follow 13-year-old genius Artemis as he discovers an underground civilization of heavily armed, technologically advanced fairies. He plots to capture one and steal its magic to heal his dying mother and save his family.
Joining Colfer as executive producers on this latest adaptation are Ben Juwono (Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Big Hero 6: The Series) and Colleen Evanson (DuckTales, Monsters at Work, Prep and Landing: The Snowball Protocol).
“I am proud and delighted to be part of the formidable team that is putting the ‘Artemis Fowl’ animation on screen,” Colfer said in a release. “Everyone is so talented and so positive that I feel certain the fairy world is in excellent hands.”
Disney previously adapted the books into Kenneth Branagh’s 2020 live-action feature, which premiered on Disney+ after its planned theatrical release was scrapped.
Disney has not yet announced a premiere date, voice cast, or animation studio for the series adaptation.
