At the start of every month, we publish an exclusive list of the animated titles bound for streaming platforms in the coming 31 days. But there isn’t space to give details on every film and series.
Which is why, halfway through October, we’ve taken stock of what’s coming out in the second half of the month, and spotlighted three series we’ll be checking out. Read on for more information, as well as trailers or preview clips …
Aquaman: King of Atlantis
What is it? A three-part mini-series that reimagines the DC superhero — once again — by stressing his soft, goofy side. Aquaman has just assumed the Atlantean throne; the show follows his first adventures as king, accompanied by royal advisor Vulko and warrior-princess Mera.
Who made it? Victor Courtright (Thundercats Roar!) and Marly Halpern-Graser (Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) are showrunners and co-executive producers. James Wan, director of the 2018 live-action feature Aquaman, is among the executive producers. The series is produced by Warner Bros. Animation.
Where and when can I watch it? The first chapter debuts on HBO Max on Thursday, with the second and third following on October 21 and 28.
High Guardian Spice
What is it? The long-awaited Crunchyroll original follows four magical girls, each named after a herb, as they train to be heroes and use their powers to defend their realm against menacing forces.
Where and when can I watch it? All 12 episodes will stream on Crunchyroll from October 26.
What is it? A rare Amazon animated original for older audiences. Set around Fairfax Avenue, L.A.’s streetwear Mecca, the series satirizes hypebeast culture and Gen Z interests in general, focusing on four middle-school kids who want to be cooler than they are.
Who made it? Longtime friends Matt Hausfater, Aaron Buchsbaum, and Teddy Riley are among the executive producers. Animation studio Titmouse (Big Mouth) and Serious Business are producing with Amazon Studios.
Where and when can I watch it? The series will be available on Prime Video from October 29.
