Garfield Garfield

Paramount+ has announced Garfield (working title), a new animated series produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studios. The series will mark Garfield’s first 2D animated television adaptation since Garfield and Friends, which aired from 1988 to 1994.

No release window was specified in today’s release, and although it hasn’t been explicitly stated, the series looks to be unrelated to the current cinematic Garfield world, which stars Chris Pratt as the orange tabby.

Inspired by the long-running comic strip created by Jim Davis, the new series promises to lean into Garfield’s core personality traits: biting sarcasm, monumental laziness, and a generally unimpressed view of the world. According to the announcement, each episode will showcase the “chonky feline at his finest.”

The show is executive-produced by Dave H. Johnson (Middlemost Post) and John Trabbic III (SpongeBob SquarePants, Middlemost Post), continuing Nickelodeon’s push into high-profile legacy IP for streaming as its parent company looks to purchase and merge with HBO Max.

Lamorne Morris, best known for his role on New Girl and his Emmy-winning performance on Fargo, will bring his comedic sensibility to the iconic Garfield role. The actor’s recent live-action résumé also includes the upcoming Spider-Noir series and the in-production Jumanji 4.

For Paramount+, the series represents another step in expanding its kids-and-family animation slate amid tremendous upheaval at the company. The streamer recently greenlit adaptations of Mo Willems’ beloved children’s books, including The Elephant & Piggie Show! and The Pigeon Show! Starring the Pigeon.
