The Wheel of Time The Wheel of Time

Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time franchise is getting a new adaptation, this time in animation, a medium that always felt ideal for the high-concept fantasy setting.

Via his media outlet, Initiate Entertainment, producer Thomas Vu, known for his work on Arcane and League of Legends, is teaming with IP owner iwot on a lineup that includes an animated series, feature films, and a mobile/PC game. The effort comes after Prime Video’s live-action series was canceled in 2025, leaving the hugely popular property in search of a new direction.

According to Variety, the goal is to build a more cohesive, cross-platform universe that can reach a wider audience. The animated projects are not being framed as a wholesale reboot so much as an extension, with the potential to explore parts of Jordan’s world that live-action struggled to cover. In the report, iwot describes the projects as “distinct” from, but in addition to, several already announced franchise films, including a CG and live-action feature.

That kind of approach is becoming more common as studios look for ways to keep big IP alive across multiple formats.

Animation, in particular, makes sense here. The scale and density of The Wheel of Time have always felt difficult to translate to the screen. Animation offers more flexibility in both economic and aesthetic terms, whether that means depicting large battles, complex magic systems, or the franchise’s sprawling geography, without cutting corners.

Vu’s involvement suggests the goal with this new adaptation is a higher-end result rather than a quick franchise add-on that will bank solely on fandom to justify its existence. His track record suggests a more cinematic, serialized style that could appeal to casual audiences who aren’t already familiar with The Wheel of Time.
