‘The Simpsons’ Opening Transformed Into Pixel Art

simpsons_pixel

“________ as pixel art” is a trend that’s been blazing for the last decade or so—and every time you think it’s out of steam, something else gets the pixelation treatment. Gimmicky or not, the pixel effect can be fun to look at when it’s well animated, like this Simpsons fan tribute directed and animated by Paul Robertson and Ivan Dixon (a partner in Rubber House). The appropriate chiptune track is by Jeremy Dower.

As I watched it, I couldn’t help but think of the 1991 Simpsons Arcade Game and its glorious 288×224 graphics:

It seems the sole purpose of still making The Simpsons is to do artsy versions of the opening.

    • Really makes you wonder why wasn’t this an actual couch gag.

      • starss

Someone made a live-action version of the opening by themselves, and then FOX asked to air it as part of a season retroactively. It’s possible!

  • James VanDam

    I recognize that style.

scott pilgrim vs the world videogame, his art has been on gravity falls, plus he did mercenary kings

      • I agree, it made me feel like it was Scott Pilgrim like as well.

Gotta love Paul Robertson, his sprite-work feels so alive and fluid.

  • This was definitely very fun to watch! I would suggest to them to sell it to FOX and have it be used for television…seriously, I’m sure the people at the Simpsons/FOX would enjoy this piece…so much they might just go ahead and do their own version.

    Definitely amazing work and creativity!

    • I agree. “One ready-made Simpsons couch-gag, get your one ready-made Simpsons couch-gag.”

  • Lori

It’s pretty amazing that the animation can be so much more fluid and full of life in comparison to the current opening.

I like how they kept the hair flip.

  • AWESOMENESS! :)

I liked the callback to Marge’s original head-turning animation from the original opening.

    • I agree – the original animation intro is more interesting and engaging than the current one…too static for my taste.

I was just gonna bring that up. They sucked all the life out with the new HD opening…

I like how they incorporated Maggie’s rival, but why did they have to give Marge no reaction. She could of done at least a small take. when you watch them side by side you can see how lazily this (particular part at least) was done. For the most part I like the HD opening. Except I also prefer Homer not getting hit by the car. Its just reflective of the Simpsons later reliance on physical comedy with Homer, which is often in place of good writing. But that’s a WHOLE other topic. ;)

    • I noticed that! It was one of my favorite parts of this. Too bad the producers removed it from the show’s opener. It was much better animated!

  • LOLWUT

Sorry, but making artsy openings won’t keep The Simpsons going.
Now don’t get me wrong, I like Paul Robertson’s work-especially on Gravity Falls-but this piece of pixel art shows that The Simpsons is nothing more than a dead horse nowadays.
Thank god the 30th season is officially the last one. Seasonal rot hurts, doesn’t it?

    Perfection!

This is AWESOME! I want this game! C’mon Fox get these guys to make a new Simpsons iPhone game. The arcade game is still one of my favs.

  • Man, that looked really good and was really well animated. This should be the intro to one of the episodes this year.
