Watch Matt Groening Defend Bart’s Honor on ‘Portlandia’

Simpsons creator Matt Groening will make a guest appearance on tonight’s episode of the IFC sketch comedy series Portlandia (10pm ET/PT). In the episode, Groening, who plays himself, files a lawsuit against angry bike messenger Spyke (Fred Armisen) over bootleg “Bart Ska-mpson” T-shirts.

The Portland-native Groening, who hasn’t acted since a walk-on cameo on The Tracey Ullman Show in 1988, told Entertainment Weekly that the most difficult part of the role was pretending to be upset by the shirt because he finds bootleg merchandise “hilarious” and would have been “delighted by a real-life Bart Ska-mpson t-shirt.”

Watch this clip from Groening’s appearance:

I heard years ago that Matt Groening has a big collection of Simpsons bootleg merchandise including a Bart Simpson statue that has OJ Simpson’s head on it and says, “I’m innocent, man!”

  • DJM

As a former crusty punk and rudie, I am always surprised when they pull something from that scene. Armisen’s gauges are fucking hilarious!

  • Mike Scott

(Man I hope I don’t get in trouble for this but if there was ever a good opportunity this is it.) Here’s a photo someone sent me years ago – Matt holding a shirt my buddy and I designed. We call the shirt ‘eSempowenis’ (we’re from South Africa). Someone in the States who I worked together with on a fan project got one for Matt and apparently he got a kick out of it. The photo and story has provided my buddy and I with lol’s for years to come.

That looked EXCELLENT! I loved seeing this when a flea market use to sell them near my house over 20 years back.

This is already looking to be a funny sketch. LOL
