Rapunzel Cameo in “Frozen” Surprises The Director of “Tangled”

Eagle-eyed viewers of Frozen may have noticed a split-second cameo in the film by Rapunzel and Flynn Rider from Tangled (above). The Tangled easter egg surprised even Nathan Greno, the co-director of the film, who had to check with one of the animators on the Frozen shot to confirm the presence of his film’s characters. A fan asked Greno on Facebook and shared the exchange on their Tumblr. “I didn’t know,” Greno told the fan. “I guess I missed that when I watched the film.”

Even though I didn’t think Frozen was even close to being as good as Tangled, they definitely felt like they shared a universe so it’s cool they did a cameo.

      Right…

I think Tiana has a cameo as well. More specifically there’s a lady that resembles her in the ballroom wearing her dress and a similar hairpiece, though I maybe wrong.

    • George Comerci

i saw that too!!!! only princess and the frog took place in the 1920′s, while tangled and frozen take place in 16th-17th century europe. and tiana’s dress sparkles more and is a little poofier. but yeah, i was thinking the same thing!!! :D

Is this who you’re talking about? http://imgur.com/t1Fi4xT

All I see is a blurry shot of a black girl. Is there a clearer picture? Because, if not, this isn’t enough to identify her. Just because she’s black doesn’t make her Tiana.

So, do they re-model the character for stuff like this, or is there like a central Disney Animation Dropbox where they can just download the old puppet rigs from previous projects?

Studios I worked at all had massive libraries of old assets in case they could ever be repurposed. I’m guessing it’s the same at Disney.

Most companies archive everything they make, especially from big films. That’s why we still have the original Toy Story models after all these years.

  • LrsDude

Absolutely! Heck, when I directed my student film, the guys doing my backgrounds had a ton of freedom. I think there are still easter eggs that I’m not aware of.

  • George Comerci

When I saw this in theaters, I squealed in glee :3

  • Mike

I thought one of the leaders from one of the visiting countries looked like a larger version of Rapunzel’s Father.

  • kris

Did no one else see tiana in the ballroom? she is in several shoots, in the background…

  • Pedro Nakama

    I thought I noticed that.

    • John R.

You noticed George Comerci squealing in glee? You got good ears.

I loved Frozen. And I loved Tangled. And I’ve pretty much loved every Disney movie I have ever seen. I think it is adorable when characters from other movies get to visit new universes. It’s a cartoon universe of fantasy and, for me, there is no need to pay any mind to place and time. Frozen featured (spoiler alert) a singing anthropomorphic snowman and dancing rock trolls. I don’t need to split hairs if Princess Tiana shows up in Frozen. I’ve already suspended my belief for the sake of art.

  • wgan

where are these screenshots from? cam? LOL

    • iKelsey

I believe these come from the short clips of the movie uploaded to the disneyanimation channel. So they’re screenshots. The “Tiana” one anyway. The Tangled one does look like it was taken with a camera.

  • Steve Henderson

How could any of you tell the difference? I thought all the characters looked the same?

  • Floyd Norman

The Disney old-timers were a good deal more scandalous than their present day counterparts. You should have seen some of the “naughty things” the bad boy artists sneaked into Disney movies. You’ll never see them today. Digital tools has effectively removed all evidence.

  • Ivysoo

    yes… tumblr.

  • Batgirl

OMG they should make tangled 2 where they get married and have kids of their own

  • Gabby

This was the best movie I have ever watched in computer animation, and I loved seeing punzie and flynn! My duaghter is still singing let it go.

  • iCueto

My 4 years-old daughter told me about this, I didn’t believe her untill I read this article

Rapunzel and Eugene make mention of spending their honeymoon in Arendelle at the end of Tangled…

Just noticed this today and then googled and found this blog to confirm. Neat little easter egg!

It’s a style choice the same way Belle, Ariel, and even Jasmine are all sort of drawn alike. Different details, but the style’s still the same. It’s sometimes referred to as the Disney princess style. So, it isn’t surprising that they’d come up with a Disney CGI style as well.

Rumor has it Elsa and Anna’s parents were on their way to Rapunzel and Flynn’s wedding when their ship capsized.

  • sexibbwqueen

Characters from older Disney anime movies are always in an newer movie google it. Disney shared that fact on Disney 411 back in 2004

And there’s a hidden mickey in every scene
