DreamWorks Releases ‘Home’ Trailer

DreamWorks Animation released a trailer today for Home. The Tim Johnson-directed film will be released on March 27, 2015. In the credits provided with the trailer, the screenplay is listed by “to be determined, based upon the novel The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex.” This is the latest in a film’s production process that I’ve seen this credit remain undetermined, and leads one to wonder what exactly is going on at DreamWorks. Have there been significant rewrites or some other situation that has prevented them from crediting the film’s writers?

Here’s the official synopsis:

When Earth is taken over by the overly-confident Boov, an alien race in search of a new place to call home, all humans are promptly relocated, while all Boov get busy reorganizing the planet. But when one resourceful girl, Tip, (Rihanna, who also contributes a song) manages to avoid capture, she finds herself the accidental accomplice of a banished Boov named Oh (Jim Parsons). The two fugitives realize there’s a lot more at stake than intergalactic relations as they embark on the road trip of a lifetime.

A non white lead character = A nice change. Said Character being voiced by Rihanna = Don’t think that’s a good choice.

While she may be a decent singer, that does not make her a good voice actor.

    • OdysseyTag

Also really like the idea of a non-white lead character – definitely seems watchable :)

      • sugar nugget

Well at least someone agrees with me.

  • Gerald Mcloy

So you have Jim Parsons, creating a character and acting, with Rihanna who is just reading lines off a script. Fart jokes. Questionable character design. And Dreamworks wonders why it’s films don’t do well.

  • well, lets see.. I like how the alien’s skin changes colors and makes patterns (like when the cat vibrates) , thats cool. But How old is Tip supposed to be? she looks like shes 10 but sounds like shes 25, but she can drive a car so maybe 16? This trailer felt really rushed and messy so I checked out the other trailer and i like it better (tho the jokes were pretty predictable.) Not going to rush into any opinions yet, Tho to be honest, I’m not too excited by these trailers.

It’s amazing how this studio’s films vary in quality so much. They’ve made fantastic films like KFP and HttyD side by side with duds like this and Turbo. It really makes one suspect there’s not much quality control coming from the top. But that it all comes down to the directors per project.

    • burymylovely

Wow, you already know this is a dud? Its not even finished. That’s an amazing power you have there.

Before you say “I can tell from the trailer” I seem to recall KFP and Dragons getting crapped on for their trailers. Dreamworks makes bad trailers. Almost always. Its no indication of the quality of the actual finished movie.

  • Ben

This movie was in development before the Minions even existed.

  • anakinbrego

Does Dreamworks want to shut down? What is this turd? Why does the young lady look like a little girl, I didn’t know kids are allowed to drive cars. Where’s the creativity, this looks so generic!!

  • DangerMaus

Sounded too much like Sheldon from “Big Bang Theory”. I wish the practice of hiring “names” would stop. Start hiring actual voice actors. I’m not going to go to an animated film because Jim Parsons or Rihanna are in it. I’m going to go because the film catches my eye.

    • Mariah

Yep! I had the same though, sounded much too like Sheldon. And I hated that tv show. You can guess what I think of the film now..

  • I was disappointed with the trailer for Home. The short had me intrigued, but this trailer has really got me thinking that this will not be as good as I desire for it to be.

As for the casting of Rihanna, not impressed right now. Especially when there are more choices to cast as Tip in the voice acting industry (I’d rather see Cree Summer honestly voice Tip than Rihanna). I do hope the movie is way better than what I’m expecting, otherwise it’ll be a tough year for DreamWorks in 2015.

At least the Penguins of Madagascar looks way better (and I really hope they don’t screw that movie up – the Madagascar series has been a huge letdown).

  • otterhead

I want to like this, because it’s a great concept. But the trailer plays out like a generic chase-scenes-and-pop-culture-gag driven flick, and wow, I really wish Oh didn’t speak in ‘cheezburger’ meme-language (“I can has?”)

  • Tony

The teaser looks good to me. While it’s not as funny as the Penguins trailer, it still has some good laughs. Favorite gag was how the alien Oh got his name. Parsons is good as Oh; there’s a touch of Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory, yet he gives enough variation so that it’s a distinct new personality. As for Rihanna, while I’m not fond of her music, I think she was okay in the few lines we’re given. As with all trailers, we should wait for the whole thing to come out before passing judgement.

  • Roberto Severino

I’m not that impressed. The humor especially falls flat in the trailer but perhaps I’ll be proven wrong somehow.

  • burymylovely

True technically they are cut by those people. But Katzenberg and company could throw down the hammer and tell them to do better. Or do something different. Just saw Dragons 2 last night, and there was an entire marketing dept credited. So they do have some blame in this.

  • Fried

Anyone who says this has obviously never been in the film industry before. Or the video game, or the literature, or even so much as written a short story.

  • One clue: BLUE PUNCH BUGGY!

    • Jelly_belly

HAHAH!! I do recall this alien to be cute and fluffy

  • sugar nugget

I have read a lot of books in my day and let me just say the true meaning of smekday is one of them and that one of them is very creative! The book is really cute! And I am hoping thos movie be just as good as the book was!
P.S. stop judging Rihanna we all no she is not thet good of an actress! But at least give her a chance! you don’t even know she going to be a bad voice actress in this or not! so stop judging and just watch the freakin movie!!!

    that is all. <3

  • nevilleross

Cree Summer is too overused and too well-known as a result of that for her own good. Having Rihanna or somebody who isn’t a traditional voice actor has worked before, and can work again.

    • James VanDam

Cree summer would be perfect because she knows how to voice act. Rihanna is a musician, not an actor. Most of the time when a non voice actor does voice work they just sound like the actor and not the character.

  • nevilleross

I’m black, and I say that black people have to be more proactive in what they want to see in media, and that means getting off of butts and getting said movies with more black people made.

  • nevilleross

No, you’re being an annoyance. And if you don’t like said film, you could have avoided seeing the trailer by using said devices to avoid having to hear it.

Ah- I always forget that the internet can be an awkward place to convey tone. I was using humour good commentator, although perhaps light hearted jesting came across wrong. I was prodding at how the potential metaphor for this film will likely go over kids heads. Sorry if I offended you! Also I’m failing to understand what your trying to get at…If I didn’t want to see the movie, I could have avoided seeing the trailer…to avoid hearing it…through an ipad? Well, don’t fret.

Despite your anger (I think? Again, its the internet, tone is complicated to get across at times) I think we both want the same outcome which is more diversity being represented instead of what is considered the “default” characters; and when diversity is being represented it doesn’t need to be through stereotypes. Being proactive is a great thing to do (as you pointed out), on the other hand, its just as important for all people, of any ethnicity, of any age, who work in animation/writing/art to evaluate and recognize who is/is not being represented and to critically look at how these characters are being represented. But it seems that this is not frequently done in the animation industry; if it is being done, there’s little to show for it.

Also I will in all likelihood go see this film (in case you were wondering…. but you probably weren’t).

  • sugar nugget

People it’s Jim Parsons! Go see the movie forget the others.

  • sugar nugget

Omg!!! she is 11 or 12 years old read the true meaning of smekday!!!! The book was really good! It had drama, humor and it is non-romantic!!! THANK GOD!!! No one wants to see a freakin 11 year old and Alain in love!!! Gross!!!

  • sugar nugget

Sure the trailer looks bad but the thing is… is the book bad? (Btw I read the book… and I am probably the only one that did)! ):[
The book was was good!!! Very creative!!!

  • sugar nugget

    Yeah someone read too!

  • sugar nugget

Btw they are coming out with a second book called “skem for president” so I think the true meaning of smekday is a series.

  • James VanDam

Ya I know, I’m just sick of studios using celebrities who can’t voice act to try to fill movie seats.
