Mondo Announces Feature Film Plans for ‘Happy Tree Friends,’ ‘Dick Figures’ and ‘Deep Space 69′

Mondo-3

Mondo Media may be expanding their brand into the kid-friendly market, but that doesn’t mean they’re neglecting their adult-oriented successes. The YouTube-based multi-channel network has announced that they will produce three feature films based on three existing properties: Happy Tree Friends, Dick Figures and Deep Space 69.

First to hit theaters will be Happy Tree Friends either in late-2015 or early 2016, followed by Dick Figures 2, the sequel to their original Dick Figures feature, which was crowdfunded on Kickstarter last year and released on YouTube in twelve installments. The release dates will be staggered three to six months apart with Deep Space 69 released last.

Bill Schultz of Home Plate Entertainment, who has produced many shows including King of the Hill and multiple seasons of The Simpsons, has been enlisted to executive produce the movies. “The overall look and feel will be beefed up,” Schultz told StreamDaily. “We want to offer a viewing experience that will be worth going to the theaters, but also enjoyable throughout the value chain of distribution.”

A budget of $10 million (it’s unclear whether that is per-film or the combined total for all three) will go toward improving the animation quality as well as acquiring “star voice talent” and adding more music. The films will be financed by Mondo with additional funding from theatrical pre-sales and distribution partners. No specific details on the distribution of the films have been made available at this time.

Let’s hope for a hard “R” rating for the “Happy Tree Friends” movie! Shit’s going to be the goriest thing put to animation!

Why does the guy on the right look so much like Jeff from Clarence?

      Fan-theories about Jeff becoming a sex-addict space ranger in 3, 2, 1…

Why does Jeff from Clarence look so much like Steve from Minecraft?

As much as theirs shows appeal to a more “Adult Swim-ish” audience, I’m glad Mondo is still out there making some promising content.

Dick Figures The Movie was (for me, personally) okay, but nonetheless I’m still excited for the sequel! I supported/pledged to the first movie on Kickstarter two years ago, and I’m looking forward to seeing what Ed & Zack and the team at Mondo Media have in stock for the future. :)

I don’t care about any of these specific properties but the prospect of more theatrical 2D animation AND theatrical adult animation all in one announcement is great news to me. For the sake of seeing more of both I hope these films are successful.

In terms of over-the-top parodies of stereotypically cute cartoons, I’ve
always preferred Conker’s Bad Fur Day over that show. It was always too one note and over reliant on shock value for my tastes. Of course, a Conker movie would be far to insane too image.

      I would watch that!

I did enjoy the first Dick Figures film, though I don’t know that a sequel was really needed, but here’s hoping its at least as good as the first.

Jeez Deep Space 69 is possibly the worst show I’ve ever seen. Terribly, hackneyed juvenile writing and totally unappealing, generic incompetent designs. Whoever made it should feel bad.

It’s nice we’re getting some animated films that aren’t meant for family viewing in theaters. I wonder how wide the release will be, or even who’s going to distribute the films?

    • Gerard McGrory

I’m guessing Lionsgate will handle international distribution?

As the creator of Deep Space 69, I have to say, that is a lot of jpeg. I would be happy to send you a higher res image to use.

between these projects and “Sausage Party”, is a renaissance of theatrical adult animation coming?
