Oft-Delayed ‘Monster Trucks’ Finally Has A Trailer

“The monster is in the truck!” yells out a character during the trailer for Monster Trucks, a live-action/animated hybrid in which (spoiler!) there are literal monsters inside of literal trucks.

The film, based on Hasbro’s Monster Trucks toy line, has been covered here on Cartoon Brew because it is the live-action directorial debut of Ice Agedirector and Blue Sky co-founder Chris Wedge. Wedge directs from a story by Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger (Kung Fu Panda, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, Trolls) and Matthew Robinson (The Invention of Lying), and screenplay by Derek Connolly (Safety Not Guaranteed, Jurassic World). MPC provided the visual effects and character animation for the film.

Currently slated to come out on January 13, 2017, the film’s release date has been pushed back more times than any other film in recent memory. Its original release date stretches back to May 29, 2015.

Paramount produced this film under their Paramount Animation banner, but the first trailer doesn’t have any branding besides the main Paramount banner.

  • @SpitAndSpite

This looks like fun, self-aware silly entertainment. Can’t wait to take my kids.

  • Jonathan Lyons

With that writing and acting, they clearly moved it to January in hopes of being fresh in the minds of Academy Award voters.

  • Conor Murnane

Neat idea for a kid’s film, and I like the image of the trucks flying in mid-air with tentacles emerging out of them….that’s all I got. Looks very unappealing in just about every other aspect. Gonna skip it.

One thing of note, however, is that the main reason it’s been delayed for so long has something to do with the monsters original design, according to an anonymous crew member:

    • “a cross between Judge Doom, a mentally handicapped E.T and a squid”

I sure hope this is true because I want to see this abomination for myself. I need to.

    • Capital_7

This account sounds like an amazing exaggeration of the reaction at a bad screening. The fact that the source is anonymous doesn’t really impress me either.

      • Sususudio

I have seen it . its an accurate description

        • Capital_7

There you go. Thanks for the followup. I hope they’ve fixed it, but the kids here were crazy about what I thought was a really nicely cut trailer. I hope they’ve pulled it together.

    • Cameron Ward

I would pay a good chunk of change to see those tapes and the monsters original design. That sounds horrible and hilarious at the same time

  • For some reason, I’ve got a feeling the Razzies might end up loving this one.

  • Capital_7

This looks completely charming, and I’m betting it will be a better time for kids than Cars 3 is going to be.

    • Dave 52

To be fair, the plot for Cars 3 and concept alone sounds like it will be more going for the tone of the original. There are some good ideas that they have. Plus, the concept art was cool. Whether the film itself is good we won’t known until it is released. Hopefully it’s more in line with the first film.

    So… It’s “E.T.” for motorheads?

  • mashed potato

The kid in me who blazed through the wondrous 90s wished this was an Attack Pack movie instead.

  • Slim Cognito

Shocked this was the result of two years of delays. Doesn’t look too special.

  • It’s like I just watched the entire film within this trailer! So I guess I shouldn’t complain that I was able to watch the entire thing for free?

  • mechasus

Wow…I’m tempted to mention a four-letter word that begins and ends with B.

    • Googamp32

If “Dumb” is the word, I can’t say I’d disagree with you.

      • mechasus

Begins with B. Middle two letters are O and M.
