“Adam and Dog” trailer

Just a heads up on a new personal short by Disney visual developement artist Minkyu Lee. It was just nominated for an Annie Award, but it hasn’t been widely seen yet. Minkyu sent us the trailer with this note:

This is a short film that me and a group of my close friends made. It was put together by artists who work at various studios, including Disney Feature, Dreamworks and Pixar; The animation is done by myself, Jennifer Hager, James Baxter, Mario Furmanczyk, Austin Madison, and Matt Williames. Glen Keane also helped by being a consultant on the film, and also doing some visual development. It is a completely independent film without any major studio involvement. We are really excited for people to see it, and wanted to share.

Here’s a few scenes to whet your appetite:

  • Laura

Looks sweet! And the backgrounds are beyond awesome.

  • yep! makes me wanna see more for sure!

  • Matt

Love it and love the people who made it.

    Make more!

Make a full length feature Film!

  • katy

Can’t wait to see this! Looks beautiful!

  • Mike Cagle

At 00:31, Adam walks in front of plants that look like they are in front of him.

    • axolotl

Oh, crap! That’s the first thing I noticed, too!=p

    • Chris Sobieniak

Well, I didn’t notice it, that’s how good it is!

  • moritz

Wow! This is very, very beautiful! I hope to see it soon.

  • I was fortunate to work with several of these artists at Cal Arts and they continue to expand their scopes. Always good and getting better.
Looking forward to more, rich storyline.

  • I have a 7 month old pup (of questionable lineage) in a play pen, in my studio, as I type. Yep, these people seem to know dogs.

I’ve kept dogs since I could afford to have a regular roof over my head. It’s actually not that common for animation to capture subtle canine mannerisms. That’s why I always remember how well Ollie Johnston animated Tramp rolling around on the ground.

  • Looks amazing, can’t wait to see it.

  • Thank you for posting this Jerry! Everyone who worked on this is so excited for everyone to see the film. I can honestly say that there is nothing like this film out there. It is personal, it is unique to Minkyu, and everyone who worked on this threw themselves into it!

  • Daniel

Here is the return to hand-drawn animation!! wished princess and the frog was like this~

  • Rufus

    Looks splendid.

  • This is really neat!

  • Tony

    Simply Beautiful!

I cannot wait to have the chance to see this film. Thank you for sharing this.

  • Real class, awesome skills.

  • Can’t wait to see more

  • E. Nygma

Wow! I wish this was a full length! We need more imaginative stuff like this. The short preview was filled with so much wonder. Haven’t seen stuff like that since the Mary Blair Eyvind Earle eras.

Can’t wait for that. I wish Disney would gather up all their shorts from the past 10 years and put out a set. They are so scattered about.

    • Julian Carter

While people from Walt Disney Animation Studios are working on this (as well as some from Pixar and DreamWorks) this will not be released under the Disney brand. Rather, as Jerry said, it will be an independent short.

However I do agree that the Disney animated shorts of the last ten years need to be compiled into one DVD/Blu-ray set. I still need to see Lorenzo!

Pixar got one. Why not Walt Disney Animation Studios?

      • Chelsea

Lorenzo is fantastic. I’m really disappointed that it isn’t available to show anywhere, it is by far my favorite of the Disney shorts I’ve seen!

By this I mean I agree. Disney should release a collection DVD of their shorts! I don’t know why they haven’t, except perhaps that some of their shorts aren’t as easy to market as “YOUR KIDS WILL LIKE THIS, IT HAS TOYS”.

      • Chris Sobieniak

Sad really, it should not always be about the toys.

  • Harry T.

Cute. I hope it eventually reveals some character animation.

  • Carolyn Bates

Gorgeous! Show us more of the animation, please!

  • Love the title. Instead of “Adam and Eve” it’s “Adam and Dog.”

Really nice animation. I really hope to see it.

  • amid

Someone forgot to draw an ass at the 50 second mark.

    • He didn’t need one until after he ate the apple.

      • axolotl

Not true, he has a subtle but clear asscrack, which, presumably he is quite comfortable with in his pre-lapsarian state.
(PS, this looks so good. The backgrounds alone make me feel like a finger-painter. Can’t wait to see the whole thing!!)

      • Chris Sobieniak

And if you had to be that anal-retentive about the matter, I see he’s got an honest ‘package’ up front in that long shot. :-P

Really, I was expecting this comment to arise soon enough.

      • Nude scene with class. I like it

    • Jen

Wait, can you really not see the butt crack?

      • amid

I see the crack. I’m just asking why there aren’t cheeks on either side of it.

      • Chris Sobieniak

Well, he could be bending in that scene if that’s the case (whatever he’s doing with the dog in that shot). Of course it could be an artist preference not to make it that detailed than it needs to be to get it across well enough.

      • The Gee

This is probably one of the most appropriate times to express it, given the main character seems to be who he is or based on him…

artists, particularly visual artists, are re-creationists.

So, we can take liberties like flattening a posterior…in a stylized way, of course.

The short looks great and obviously is ambitious. The music also reminds me to mention July Films’ production. Animation with a playful element is what we need more of, in my humble opinion.

      • Chris Sobieniak

I think of the one or two guys who get on some adaptations because they notice a belly button that shouldn’t be there either! :-P

      • Amanda

more stylized adam and dog short I found

      • daniel

… it amazes me that the fact the main character’s butt cheeks arent drawn with a line is the only observation you felt worth writing a comment about..

    • Amanda

here’s another Adam and dog animated short, where they drew in the crack and added a fig leaf. haha

  • It’s great to see such awesome DRAFTSMANSHIP!! Looking forward to this one – what a tour de force of the power of motion and anatomy combined with a true vision….

  • Amanda

beautiful animation, can’t wait. here’s another adam and dog short I found

  • Billy Batz

We all love Mowgli don’t we?

  • Chelsea

This looks great! I’m excited to see such a well-crafted film!

  • John

James Baxter! So that’s what you’ve been up to!

  • Huh.. Something I actually want to see? WEIRD!

  • cijfer

Looks like the director got dumped. As this seems to be about how man was happier before women came to the picture.

    • whiogirl

I bet you the dog gets dumped at the end.

  • -Its going to be very good. The last version I saw was solid. Good story and great animation.

  • Rick Farmiloe

I animated on this too. Just did three scenes of birds flying….but I was so happy to help out. This really shows how great hand drawn animation CAN look when done properly. It’s a great short, and hopefully will get a lot of exposure!

    PS….Mike Gabriel’s LORENZO is a Classic!!

  • What I wanna know is when are studio execs gonna get that they have great talent that could drive new original product from their studios. This looks fantastic and will probably be awesome. It could be a feature from Disney or Paramount or Warner Brothers.

  • What the heck ever happened to the momentum of this short? It seems to have disappeared after it’s Annie win. Amid / Jerry, can you help enlighten us??
