“New Tokyo Ondo” by Misaki Uwabo

If you thought Disney/Dali’s Destino was a trip, check out Misaki Uwabo’s student film from Tama Art University in Tokyo. It’s nothing short of… well, I’ll let you decide if it’s genius or insane.

Personally I think this is the coolest thing I’ve seen in a long time. It has no story and the animation is bizarre – but its exhilarating, and it makes me feel good.

(Thanks, Jake Parker)

This is the most exhilarating piece of animation I’ve seen in the past year. This is what I want to see when I go to senior thesis shows. Vital and virtuosic. I love it. Totally inspiring

Wow – I just watched it this morning and can’t stop thinking about it! That hasn’t happened for me in such a long time … is this thing animated at 30 frames per second?! I thought I read that on her site – does anyone know for certain?

I love it! It’s crazy and random. Did she storyboard this or went straight ahead and made it up as she went along? That’s what I want to know.

Beautiful. More proof that explicit narrative is a burden to be shed whenever possible. To quote Jesse Moynihan above, it’s “exhilarating”.

Similar to Wanwa the Puppy from Genius Party 2, is this a new trend in Japanese animation?
