Sure is a strange way to sell yogurt – but I’m sold! This new spot for Müller Dairy makes clever use of Yogi Bear, Mr. Men, Kitt (The Knight Rider) and Muttley! Directed by Mustashrik Mahbub for UK’s Partizan Lab. (Thanks Betsie Beadling, via Facebook) 38 Comments » posted in Advertising, Mr. Men, Muttley, Yogi Bear April 4, 2011 4:12 pm
Hop, Illumination Entertainment’s second animated feature following last year’s Despicable Me, debuted in first place in North America with $37.5 million last weekend, making it the second strongest domestic opening of 2011. The solid US debut for the live-action/CG combo was tempered by the film’s tepid foreign premiere where it grossed under $7 million from 2,362 locations in 26 markets. Universal, which distributed the film, offered a perfectly rational reason for the poor overseas performance, blaming it on the “first warm and sunny weekend of the year.” ILM’s Rango scored $4.5 million in its fifth frame for a total of $113.7 million in the US. Extraterrestrial live-action/CG combo Paul followed behind with $4.2 million and a three-week total of $31.8 million. Some other US and worldwide tallies for recent animated pics: 20 Comments » posted in Feature Film, Gnomeo and Juliet, Hop, Mars Needs Moms, My Dog Tulip, Paul, Rango, Tangled, The Illusionist, Yogi Bear January 16, 2011 11:52 am

No new animated films this week in the US. The quick fading Yogi Bear dropped from fourth to eighth place with an FINAL $6.6 million and a grand total of $75.4 million. Disney’s Tangled took an FINAL $5.1 million in its 7th weekend, good for tenth place. Its total now stands at $175.8 million. Sylvain Chomet’s The Illusionist earned an FINAL $34,400 from three theaters. Its three work total is an impressive $180,000. By contrast, Mamoru Hosoda’s Summer Wars took in $13,604 from 11 theaters, and its three-week total is a paltry $33,089. Paul and Sandra Fierlinger’s My Dog Tulip earned a FINAL $13,039 from 4 theaters for a total of $167,939. (Final numbers will be updated on Monday afternoon.) 18 Comments » posted in Business, Feature Film, My Dog Tulip, Summer Wars, Tangled, The Illusionist, Yogi Bear January 2, 2011 11:20 am
Disney’s Tangled wrapped up its sixth weekend with an FINAL $9.8 million and a grand total of $167.8 million. The film may end up grossing $200 million domestically, if not more. Early next week, it will surpass Tarzan to become the highest-grossing Disney feature in the US since The Lion King. It is a worthwhile accomplishment, however in terms of admissions, the film lags far behind its predecessors:
Yogi Bear took in $12.4 million for a three-week total of $65.8 million. The film is no Alvin and the Chipmunks or Stuart Little but it will end up doing performing better than other CG animal pics like Marmaduke, Garfield and Underdog. DreamWorks’ Megamind added $630,940 boosting its total to $144.2 million. Despite higher 3-D prices, the film lags the US grosses of earlier DreamWorks features like Over the Hedge, Shark Tale, and the Madagascar series. Jeffrey Katzenberg didn’t heed his own advice about 3-D: “If you’re asking people to pay a premium price, you better deliver.” Sylvain Chomet’s The Illusionist did even better in its second weekend, picking up $46,416 from just three theaters and boosting its total to $123,476. It had the fifth-highest per theater average of any film in release with $15,472. Paul and Sandra Fierlinger’s My Dog Tulip earned $5,340 from 3 theaters. Its total is now $151,258. 19 Comments » posted in Feature Film, Megamind, Tangled, The Illusionist, Yogi Bear December 24, 2010 12:05 am
Believe it or not there was ONE good thing about the recent Yogi Bear movie: the animated end titles by yU+Co, designed by Synderela Peng (Watchmen, Hulk, Bee Movie, etc.). Motionographer has posted the end titles, so you will NEVER have to see the whole film that precedes it. “Yogi Bear” gives cheap hackwork a bad name” – Michael Phillips, LA TIMES “This mostly live-action film is a bland 21st-century family comedy without a single moment that captures the wit, energy or sophistication of the original, which by now dates back more than 50 years.” – Mike Hale, NY TIMES “Dumber than the average cartoon adaptation. Yogi Bear is a big boo-boo!” – Claudia Puig, USA TODAY The critics have had their way with Yogi Bear and we’ll miss bashing this film ourselves. So here, one last time, we open the commentary to those brave souls who actually screened this cinematic travesty. C’mon – someone reading this blog must have seen it. Tell us who you are – and what you thought. 61 Comments » posted in Talkback, Yogi Bear December 13, 2010 2:05 pm
This parody is the brainchild of RISD grad/animator Edmund Earle. Almost makes me want to see the real Yogi Bear movie. Almost. (Thank you Paul Dini, Joseph Game and all the others who sent this to us) |
