Studio 4℃’s Anime Adaptation ‘All You Need Is Kill’ Gets International Trailer
Warner Bros. Japan has released the main international trailer for All You Need Is Kill, the upcoming anime adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s acclaimed sci-fi novel of the same name. The film will have a limited theatrical run in Japan in January. GKIDS picked up its U.S. rights at Annecy, although no distribution plans have been unveiled yet.
Produced by Studio 4℃ (Mind Game, Tekkonkinkreet), the film reimagines Sakurazaka’s time-loop war story through striking hand-drawn animation and cutting-edge visuals. It draws the same source material as the popular 2014 live-action sci-fi feature Edge of Tomorrow, starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.
Directed by Kenichiro Akimoto, All You Need Is Kill follows Rita, a young soldier trapped in a relentless time loop after an alien invasion devastates Earth. Each time she dies, the day begins anew, pushing her to the limits of endurance and self-discovery. Alongside Keiji, a fellow fighter who shares her repetitive fate, Rita must find a way to break free from the cycle and change the course of battle.
“I am honored to be involved in the project of animating this wonderful novel,” said Akimoto on the film’s official website. “This novel has been made into both manga and a Hollywood movie, and I hope that Studio℃’s unique visual expression will further enhance the value of this book in the animation film. I also hope that the viewers will find a hope to live in their everyday life through this film.”
The project has been generating buzz on the festival circuit, with screenings at Annecy, Fantasia, Sitges, and New York Comic Con. Upcoming festival stops include Animation Is Film, Bucheon International Animation Film Festival, and the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival.
