‘Fullmetal Alchemist’ Creator Unveils ‘Daemons Of The Shadow Realm’ Adaptation, Crunchyroll To Distribute
Fullmetal Alchemist creator Hiromu Arakawa’s popular manga, Daemons of the Shadow Realm, is getting an anime series adaptation, announced during Crunchyroll’s industry panel at Anime Expo. Alongside a teaser trailer, it was confirmed that the Sony-owned streamer will host the upcoming series in key markets, including North America, Europe, and Asia.
Arakawa originally launched Daemons of the Shadow Realm in Monthly Shonen Gangan in December 2021, and nine volumes have been published since. The upcoming anime adaptation is being produced by Square Enix, Aniplex, and Bones, with Bones Film (Fullmetal Alchemist, Eureka Seven, My Hero Academia) handling animation production.
A Crunchyroll synopsis for the series adaptation reads:
In a world where certain humans command mighty supernatural duos called Daemons, it is the birthright of “the children who sunder day and night”—twins Yuru and Asa—to rule over these powerful entities.
Separated from a young age and unaware of the truth of their birth, brother and sister must fight to make their way back to each other, claim their birthright, and save the world…
Although a release date for the show has not been announced, we do know some of the key staff members working on it. Masahiro Ando (Sword of the Stranger) will direct at studio Bones, with series composition by Noboru Takagi (Golden Kamuy). Character designs will be handled by Nobuhiro Arai (Bungo Stray Dogs), and Kenichiro Suehiro will compose the music.
Fullmetal Alchemist, Arakawa’s best-known work, remains one of the most influential IPs of the 2000s. The manga has sold over 80 million copies worldwide and has been adapted into two anime series, Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.
