Makoto Shinkai Makoto Shinkai

Crunchyroll will host a pop-up installation in Los Angeles showcasing the work of Japanese filmmaker Makoto Shinkai on Sunday, November 19, featuring an in-person appearance by the anime auteur.

Attendance is free, but registration is required. Ticketing opened today at 10 a.m. PST, and tickets will likely move quickly. Those interested in attending can RSVP here.

The pop-up, titled “Makoto Shinkai: A Journey from Voices of a Distant Star through Suzume,” will be held at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. It will explore Shinkai’s creative and storytelling processes, and look at how his filmmaking changed following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, an evolution that features prominently in the films he has made since.

The event will also feature an exhibition of artwork from eight Shinkai films, starting with 2002’s Voices of a Distant Star and running through his most recent film, Suzume, a strong contender in this year’s animated feature Oscar race. The exhibition is clearly part of Sony-owned Crunchyroll’s previously announced awards push for Suzume.

Three of Shinkai’s films will be screened at the pop-up installation:

10:30 a.m. – Public Screening of Weathering with You (2019)

1:30 p.m. – Private Screening of Suzume (2023)

5:15 p.m. – Public Screening of Your Name (2016)

“Makoto Shinkai: A Journey from Voices of a Distant Star through Suzume” is organized by Crunchyroll in cooperation with CoMix Wave Film, Story Inc, and Toho.
