WHAT IS THE MOST VALUABLE PIECE OF ARTISTIC ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED, AND FROM WHO?
“This may be less general advice on art, but more about the art community itself. Last year I had the ability to attend the Schoolism event in Denver, Colorado, and had the opportunity to hear amazing artists like Bobby Chiu, Jeff Turley, Karla Ortiz, and Stephen Silver speak about their art and their careers. Silver and Chiu both struck me in particular – both were very passionate not only about their art, but about reaching out to other artists and helping them on their journeys. They both encouraged everyone in the audience to support our fellow artists, bolster their successes, and offer help in reaching out to other artists to encourage their growth. That was the whole backbone of their mission, and it struck me as an artist about the importance of trying to be more involved in the community and fostering spaces where artists can learn from one another. Another great piece of advice they stressed was that perseverance is important, and that we’re all overly critical of ourselves to a point where we can neglect our own talent and opportunity, and how each of our unique visions and experiences can influence our art.”
