‘The Emoji Movie’ Sets Animation Record With 4 Razzie Nominations
Nominations are out for the 38th annual Razzie Awards, honoring the worst that Hollywood has to offer filmgoers, and animated filmmaking was recognized in a big way this year.
Specifically, Sony Picture Animation’s The Emoji Movie, which racked up four nominations – a record for an animated film at the Razzies. It includes a nomination for the top Razzie prize, the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Picture, marking the first time an animated film has been nominated in the category.
Emoji Movie also scored nominations for worst director (Tony Leondis), worst screenplay (Tony Leondis, Eric Siegel, Mike White), and worst screen combo (any two obnoxious emojis).
Sony, for its part, has promoted the film with a tongue-in-cheek “for your consideration” video that includes the following text in the video description: “Give 💩 a chance!”
The Razzie winners will be announced on Saturday, March 3, the day before the 90th Academy Awards.
[Correction: An earlier version of the piece incorrectly stated that The Emoji Movie is the second time an animated film has been nominated for the Golden Raspberry. It is the first time.]
