The Spanish Academy held its annual Goya Awards over the weekend, the country’s equivalent of the Oscars, and Pablo Berger’s Robot Dreams won best animated feature and best adapted screenplay.

The film, a dialogue-free adaptation of Sara Varon’s graphic novel of the same name, was also nominated for best original music and best editing. That stands in stark contrast to the U.S. Academy’s refusal to consider animated films in any categories beyond those dedicated to animation.

This year, for instance, the Critics Choice Awards nominated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse for best visual effects and best score and nominated Wish and The Super Mario Bros. Movie for best song. The Golden Globes nominated animated titles in its cinematic and box office achievement, score, and original song categories. Meanwhile, no animated film was nominated for any category other than animated feature and animated short this year.

Robot Dreams’ adapted screenplay win was a bit of a coup as it was going up against Goya powerhouse Society of the Snow, which won 12 prizes this year, including best special effects and best picture. The special effects prize was awarded to Pau Costa, Félix Bergés, and Laura Pedro for their work on the J.A. Bayona-helmed feature.

The 2024 best animated short prize went to To Bird or Not to Bird by frequent Alberto Vázquez collaborator Martín Romero. The film, produced by Chelo Loureiro and longtime Vázquez producer Iván Miñambres, previously impressed at 2023’s Cannes Animation Day.
