Moana 2 Moana 2

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Moana 2 topped $1 billion in global box office this past weekend. It is the third release of 2024 to reach that milestone, joining two other Disney titles: Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine.

The performance of the film reaffirms the power of animation at the global box office. Half of the top 10 highest-grossing films at the global box office last year were animated, including three of the top four: Inside Out 2 ($1.69 billion), Moana 2 ($1.01 billion), Despicable Me 4 ($969.f1 million), Mufasa: The Lion King ($591.9 million), and Kung Fu Panda 4 ($547.6 million).

Moana 2, which was originally planned as a direct-to-streaming series but shifted to theatrical mid-production, has grossed $445.1m domestic and $567.1m from international play. Top international markets are France ($61.2m), UK ($50.5m), Germany ($43.1m), Australia ($30.9m), and Japan ($30.7m).

Directed by David G. Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, Moana 2 will surpass Zootopia sometime this week to become the third-highest-grossing Walt Disney Animation Studios release of all time, behind Frozen and Frozen II.
