Ne Zha 2 Ne Zha 2

The Chinese animated feature Ne Zha 2 has smashed just about every box office record in the history books, and now it can claim another major milestone: reaching $2 billion. It becomes only the seventh film in history to do so.

The film, directed by Yu “Jiaozi” Yang, has reached $2.03 billion across all territories, including $32 million from theaters outside of China. Inside of China, it has grossed $1.99 billion and will hit $2 billion on Saturday, its 39th day of release.

Among the film’s records:

  • Highest-grossing animated movie of all time
  • First animated movie to reach $2 billion
  • Fastest animated movie to reach $1 billion
  • First movie to reach $1 billion in a single territory
  • Seventh-highest grossing movie of all-time
  • Highest-grossing non-American movie of all time

In the coming weeks, Ne Zha 2 will overtake Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the fifth-highest grossing movie in box office history. The only films ahead of it will be Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Titanic.

Besides setting records, the film has reaffirmed the strength of animation worldwide. It serves as a striking reminder to the entire film industry that animation is in high demand all over the world and that film studios would be wise to boost their animation slates.
