‘Zootopia 2’ Becomes Disney Animation’s Highest-Grossing Release Of All Time
Zootopia 2 has officially overtaken Frozen 2 to become the highest-grossing animated feature ever released by Walt Disney Animation Studios.
The sequel has now grossed an estimated $1.46 billion worldwide, according to Variety, passing Frozen 2’s $1.45 billion haul from 2019 and cementing its place at the top of Disney’s animation leaderboard, with plenty of time to extend its lead. Zootopia 2 needs to make another $250 million to pass Pixar’s Inside Out 2 to become the highest-grossing animated film ever distributed by Disney, which would also make it the second-highest-grossing animated film of all time. Ne Zha 2‘s all-time record of $2.2 billion seems unassailable.
The numbers behind that milestone are, simply put, incredible. The film has earned roughly $333 million in North America and a staggering $1.13 billion internationally. Only five weeks into its theatrical run and still posting huge numbers in many territories, the movie has shown off incredible legs, recently adding around $88 million globally over the Christmas holiday weekend alone.
One of Zootopia 2’s most impressive feats has been the speed with which it has surpassed key milestones. The film crossed the $1 billion mark in just 17 days, making it the fastest PG-rated release to ever do so. Its success in China has been historic for a non-domestic film, with revenues there surpassing $500 million, an extraordinary figure at a time when many major Hollywood releases are struggling catch a foothold in the market.
In 2025, only a handful of films reached the billion-dollar mark, underscoring the scale of Zootopia 2’s achievement. For Walt Disney Animation, the film represents both a commercial high point and, to the dismay of some, further evidence that sequels remain the most reliable path to major box office success. What this signals for the studio’s long-term animation strategy remains to be seen, but it is almost certainly not lost on Zootopia 2’s director, Jared Bush, who, alongside Byron Howard, also serves as Walt Disney Animation Studios’ chief creative officer.
