‘Zootopia 2’ Nears $1B Globally, ‘Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution’ Breaks Out
Zootopia 2’s second week in cinemas brought another bolt of energy to theaters around the world as Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution became the latest anime episode collection to draw huge numbers at the box office.
While Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 claimed the domestic crown, Zootopia 2 continued to dominate nearly everywhere else, racing toward the billion-dollar mark with remarkable speed. With China once again delivering standout numbers, early December is turning into one of the most lively periods of the year.
Domestic Box Office
Disney’s Zootopia 2 kept its holiday glow going in its second frame, pulling in an estimated $43 million and lifting its domestic total to $220.5 million. That’s a strong hold after its Thanksgiving surge and gives the studio another win as Disney becomes the first to cross $5 billion for the year. The sequel will easily breeze past the $300 million domestic mark, and with only Paramount’s upcoming SpongeBob film standing out as mainstream kids and family competition, it could leg out something truly historic.
Zootopia 2 wasn’t the only big animated winner over the weekend, though. Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution had the kind of weekend that has become increasingly normal for anime tentpoles. The GKids release opened with $10.2 million, a brilliant return for a title assembled from repackaged series material. Anime has been one of the few consistently hot mediums at the domestic box office, and Execution’s opening reinforces that point. It finished fourth for the weekend, just behind Wicked: For Good.
International Box Office
Overseas, Zootopia 2 delivered another knockout weekend, grossing $219 million and pushing its international haul to $695 million. That puts the film at a staggering $916 million globally, well on its way to becoming Disney’s fastest billion-dollar animated release since 2019. The sequel’s international strength has been remarkable, with few signs of fatigue across the 50+ territories in play.
Anime also traveled well. Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution added $5.1 million offshore, bringing its global weekend to just over $15 million and its worldwide cume to $30.2 million. Between Execution and the still-potent Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle – which finished in 10th place globally at $3.1 million over the weekend from just four remaining territories, anime continues to be one of the most reliable engines of international turnout.
China Box Office
In China, Zootopia 2 remained the country’s runaway favorite. The film topped the weekend again with $115.3 million, bringing its China cume to $429 million and further solidifying the market as one of its most valuable.
With Zootopia 2 showing extraordinary staying power and Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution punching well above expectations, the early December frame delivered something the global box office has been desperately missing: momentum.
