On Tuesday, Cartoon Brew reported on new research revealing that France’s exports of animation reached record highs in 2019. The CNC (France’s national film board) has now released a follow-up report focusing on the SVOD market. Like the first report, this one contains some illuminating data about the country’s animation production.
The new research focuses on France’s exports of shows to streaming (and linear) platforms around the world. Among its findings:
- French shows — of all kinds — account for 1.1% of tv titles available on SVOD platforms outside France. In terms of market share outside country of origin, it is seventh in the world, behind Anglophone countries (U.S., U.K., Canada) and Asian nations (Japan, South Korea, China).
- Of those French shows available to stream outside France, 25.5% are animated. This is the second-highest animation share of any country, behind only Japan (49.0%). For the U.S., the number is 10.3%.
- France commissions more animated titles than any country bar the U.S. and Japan. Public broadcaster France Télévisions is the fifth most prolific commissioner of animation in the world (after Netflix, Warnermedia, ViacomCBS, and Disney). See graph below:
- The report also contains a useful breakdown of SVOD platforms’ representation of animation, by percentage of total catalogue. Unsurprisingly, dedicated anime streamers top the list. Brazil’s Looke, a major buyer of French content, comes third:
