David David

Angel Studios has released the full trailer for David, its upcoming animated musical feature, which will hit theaters on December 19. The film’s soundtrack is now also available online.

Billed as the studio’s most ambitious family production to date, the film dramatizes the early life and rise of the biblical figure David through large-scale musical sequences and studio-quality CG animation. The film is spun off from Young David, a CG series of shorts released by Angel in 2023.

A collaboration between Angel and South Africa’s Sunrise Animation Studios (Jungle Beat: The Movie), the film is directed by Phil Cunningham and Brent Dawes. David features Grammy-nominated recording artist Phil Wickham in the title role, alongside Brandon Engman as Young David and Brian Stivale. Wickham and Engman also headline the film’s original soundtrack, released alongside the trailer, which includes contributions from artists Lauren Daigle and Brian Stivale.

The studio previously released The King of Kings, a CG-animated adaptation inspired by Charles Dickens’ posthumously published story about Jesus Christ. The film was a surprise box-office hit, earning an estimated $19 million in its opening weekend from 3,200 theaters and finishing its run at $77.3 million. David feels like a lock to surpass that total easily, and perhaps by quite a bit.

While the narrative draws from well-known source material, Angel Studios appears focused on presenting the project as a broad-audience holiday release rather than a faith-market exclusive, like DreamWorks did in the late ’90s with titles like The Prince of Egypt and Joseph: King of Dreams. The David trailer emphasizes scale, stylized worldbuilding, musical spectacle, and the grown-up version of the film’s titular protagonist is almost distractingly hunky, suggesting the studio aims to compete in the mainstream family animation space this holiday season, not just preach to the faith-based choir.
