GKIDS Picks Up U.S. Rights To Alberto Vázquez’s ‘Decorado’ For Spring Release
GKIDS has acquired North American rights to Decorado, the latest animated feature from Spanish auteur Alberto Vázquez (Unicorn Wars, Birdboy: The Forgotten Children), and will release the film theatrically in the U.S. on May 15.
The Toho-owned U.S. distributor also released an English-subtitled trailer for the film.
The pickup continues GKIDS’ collaboration with Vázquez following its 2023 release of Unicorn Wars and adds another adult-aimed international title to the distributor’s impressive catalog.
Decorado expands Vázquez’s 2016 Goya-winning short of the same name into a feature-length film, maintaining the director’s signature contrast between cute character design and bleak thematic material. It’s produced by UniKo and Abano Producións, with Vázquez directing and co-writing the screenplay with F. Xavier Manuel Ruiz. Art direction is by José Luis Ágreda, whose design work helps define the film’s artificial, stage-like environments.
One of the sharpest recent animated satires of late-stage capitalism and the modern media landscape, Decorado centers on Arnold, a middle-aged mouse whose reality begins to unravel as he suspects that the world around him is an artificial construct. As his paranoia deepens, the film broadens into a critique of social systems built on control, performance, and illusion. The film is one of Vazquez’s most Spanish in its details, but also one of his most accessible for international audiences, given its larger themes.
The feature premiered at Fantastic Fest in 2025 and went on to screen at festivals including Sitges, BFI London Film Festival, and Animation Is Film. It has since collected multiple awards, including the Spanish Academy Goya Award for best animated feature.
