Amazon MGM Studios is developing an animated feature based on Game of Pets, the new children’s book series from The Bad Guys creator Aaron Blabey. Rideback and Foundation Media Partners are producing the adaptation, adding another of the Australian author’s properties to the animation pipeline.

According to Deadline, which broke the news, Rideback co-CEOs Jonathan Eirich and Michael LoFaso will produce alongside Foundation Media founder Patrick Hughes. Blabey and Rideback’s Nick Reynolds will serve as executive producers.

The series follows Griff, an 11-year-old boy with numerous allergies, whose encounter with a talking axolotl named Bob reveals that he may be humanity’s best hope. Household pets are secretly animal overlords, and Earth is caught up in an intergalactic game show. Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group published the first book, The Boy Who Knew Too Much.

Blabey’s books have already inspired DreamWorks Animation’s The Bad Guys films and Netflix’s Thelma the Unicorn. Foundation Media has worked on both properties, giving the company an established relationship with the author’s work.

Rideback, meanwhile, comes to the project after Disney’s 2025 live-action Lilo & Stitch earned more than $1 billion worldwide. Its credits also include the studio’s live-action adaptation of Aladdin. Game of Pets brings the company together with Foundation Media and Amazon MGM around a newly launched book property.
