MIAM! distribution has acquired international rights to TRASH!, a French hybrid special that combines live-action and stop-motion animation to tell the story of a discarded coffee cup that refuses to disappear.

Produced by Paris-based Darjeeling and currently airing in France, the 50-minute film follows Gobi, a single-use cup left to endure 200 years of existence after holding a latte for just three minutes. The project uses absurdist humor and satire to imagine the inner lives of everyday waste.

Writers Géraldine de Margerie and Maxime Donzel created the story, with Benjamin Nuel directing and animation from stop-motion specialist Kim Keukeleire. The voice cast features Sébastien Chassagne, Romane Bohringer, Anaïde Rozam, Jenny Letellier, and sanitation worker and TikTok figure Ludovic Franceschet.

Darjeeling’s Marc Lustigman said the project resonated with audiences almost immediately:

The series quickly went viral online, amassing nearly 2 million views on TikTok in less than 10 days. TRASH! represents also a remarkable achievement in securing unprecedented financing and rallying the support of numerous French institutions committed to environmental and sustainable initiatives (Alcome, Gestes Propres, Syctom and Refashion).

For Miam!, the pick-up extends its collaboration with Darjeeling. Mélanie Errea, the company’s head of sales and acquisitions, explained:

This acquisition strengthens Miam! distribution long-standing and successful collaboration with producer Darjeeling, a partnership that began with Miam!’s founding in 2016 and has since delivered numerous international successes. Together, we’ve brought titles such as Yeti Tales, Our Summer of Freedom, and Fail in Love to international audience. TRASH! stands out for its distinctive hybrid graphic design and powerful storytelling. With a witty tone, it addresses the themes of fast consumption and the afterlife of our waste, delivering a message that resonates with our catalogue’s editorial vision.”

TRASH! joins Miam!’s growing young adult lineup, which also includes Boys Boys Boys, It’s My Body!, and Brazen.
