‘I, Chihuahua’ Kicks Out At Two: Jorge Gutiérrez Relaunches The Shelved Netflix Project
Mexican animator and filmmaker Jorge Gutiérrez is reviving his animated feature I, Chihuahua, which was previously shelved by Netflix. The film, which had been in production as a Netflix Original, is now moving forward independently through a new partnership with U.K.-based Snafu Pictures (Bad Dinosaurs).
The relaunch adds to a packed slate for Gutiérrez, who is also currently developing a Speedy Gonzalez project at Warner Bros. and simultaneously working on a pair of lucha-libre-themed adult animation projects, El Guapo vs. the Narco Vampires and La Venganza Rodriguez.
According to Deadline, which broke the news, the animated feature is being introduced to potential distributors at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin, signaling a fresh start after creative differences led to its earlier cancellation.
The outlet reports that Gutiérrez will remain at the helm of the film, which is based on an original idea by comedian Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias and centers on a spirited underdog chihuahua named Chacho who embraces lucha libre culture to prove himself.
Speaking about the personal significance of the project, Gutiérrez said:
I, Chihuahua – is straight from my moustached heart – Lucha, comedy, and a heartfelt story about being underestimated until the moment you triumph. Chacho is small, resilient, and courageous. I’ve wanted to bring him to the ring of cinema for a long time.
The revival underscores Gutiérrez’s continued commitment to culturally rooted storytelling, building on the spirit of his earlier animated successes, including the Emmy-winning El Tigre, Annie-winning Maya and the Three, and cult favorite The Book of Life. With new backing in place, I, Chihuahua is once again positioned to find a global audience and move toward full production.
