Insectario Insectario

Following up her Oscar-winning success with Flow, producer and co-writer Matīss Kaža has joined Insectario, the first feature from Mexican stop-motion filmmaker Sofía Carrillo (Prita Noire, Cerulia), as a producer as the project adds new international partners to an already impressive lineup of backers.

As first reported by Variety, Canada’s Productions Ocho and Latvia’s Trickster Pictures have come aboard as co-producers alongside Mexico’s Pimienta Films and Spain’s Inicia Films. Written by Monika Revilla, the feature is being produced by fellow Oscar-winner Nicolás Celis (Roma, Prayers for the Stolen) and Valérie Delpierre (Schoolgirls, 20,000 Species of Bees).

Productions Ocho, led by Daniela Mujica, will contribute stop-motion and post-production expertise, supported by Telefilm Canada and regional funding.

Kaža, who co-wrote and produced Flow, revealed that Insectario has secured €250,000 from the National Film Centre of Latvia. The funding will allow Latvian CG artists, including several who worked on Flow, to join the production.

“Sofía Carrillo has a very special voice and animation style, so I was very glad to join Insectario as a co-producer,” Kaža told Variety.

The additions further strengthen the international profile of Insectario, which has been a buzzy title at several markets and networking events over the past couple of years, scoring backing from Ibermedia Next in Spain and a spot in the Annecy Animation Showcase at this year’s Cannes Festival.

The film is currently slated for release in 2028.
