Aussie Indie Feature ‘Lesbian Space Princess’ Gets Halloween Release Date After Impressive Festival Run
Cineverse has announced that the acclaimed animated sci-fi comedy Lesbian Space Princess will touch down in U.S. theaters on October 31, 2025, just in time for Halloween.
The feature debut from South Australian filmmakers Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese follows Princess Saira, an introspective royal who sets out to rescue her bounty-hunter ex-girlfriend from the villainous Straight White Maliens, with help from a runaway gay-pop idol.
The film has already carved out a stellar festival run. It premiered at the Adelaide Film Festival in October 2024, where it won the Audience Award for Feature Fiction. At the 75th Berlin International Film Festival, it captured the coveted Teddy Award for best queer feature and placed second in the Panorama Audience Award. Its momentum continued at the 72nd Sydney Film Festival, where audiences named it the Best Australian Feature, and it recently took home the Grand Prize at Poland’s Octopus Film Festival. LSP also screened in Annecy’s Contrechamp section.
The film’s superstar Aussie voice cast includes Shabana Azeez, Bernie Van Tiel, Gemma Chua-Tran, Richard Roxburgh, drag star Kween Kong, and comedy troupe Aunty Donna.
Critics have praised Lesbian Space Princess for its sharp humor, queer sensibility, and inventive animation. The Hollywood Reporter called it “a hidden gem,” while Variety described it as “a testament to the power of independent filmmaking.”
With its mix of outrageous space adventure, unapologetic queer identity, and offbeat comedy, Cineverse’s Halloween release positions Lesbian Space Princess as one of the year’s most original and celebratory big-screen events.
