Universal and Illumination have revealed the official title for the follow-up to their 2023 blockbuster: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The animated sequel will hit theaters on April 3, 2026.

The title draws inspiration from Super Mario Galaxy, Nintendo’s beloved 2007 Wii game that sent the mustachioed plumber into outer space. The announcement came during Friday’s Nintendo Direct showcase, just ahead of the Super Mario Bros. franchise’s 40th anniversary. Fans were treated to a short teaser featuring Mario dozing beneath a tree near Princess Peach’s castle before the camera tilted skyward into space. Quick shots of familiar characters — Toads, Cheep Cheeps, and a mischievous Monty Mole — rounded out the sneak peek.

Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who directed the first film, and Matthew Fogel, who wrote it, will return for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Their partnership with Illumination and Nintendo helped turn the first film into a global hit, and their comeback signals a continuation of the creative vision that brought Mario’s world to life on the big screen.

Returning to voice the iconic lineup are Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.

The original Super Mario Bros. Movie, released in April 2023, became a box office juggernaut, grossing $1.36 billion worldwide and cementing itself as the most successful video game adaptation to date. It currently ranks as the fifth-highest-grossing animated film in history.
