On the Edge On the Edge

Studio 100 International, Studio BlueGreen, and Viva Pictures have unveiled new details about On The Edge, an original animated feature aiming for a worldwide theatrical release in 2027.

The team behind the project is positioning On the Edge as a high-energy family adventure with an unusually explicit environmental mission baked into its narrative DNA.

It’s been a while since we’ve had an update on this project, but it was a buzzy title at the 2023 American Film Market, before veteran story artist and Ron’s Gone Wrong co-director Octavio Rodriguez (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Coco) was announced.

In today’s update, the director said:

This film truly is the little engine that could. We set out to create a story that is heartfelt, genuine, and funny, and I believe we accomplished exactly what we intended. It’s a story that can further build on the human-animal bond by tapping into the inherent empathy within all of us. I am incredibly proud of us hitting the mark and making a film that I believe can stand the test of time. With such a great cast, every character has a distinctive personality. I am very sure that every viewer will find one of our animal personalities they deeply connect with.

On The Edge follows a group of endangered and overlooked animals on a globe-trotting quest for survival. The story centers on Donnie, a Cuban solenodon who leads a ragtag band of misfits as they attempt to uncover why certain species thrive while others disappear.

According to the trio of procurement companies, what sets On The Edge apart is its origin. The film was developed by Studio BlueGreen, a not-for-profit creative studio focused on using entertainment to deepen audiences’ connection with nature. That ethos extends beyond the narrative into the project’s broader marketing and outreach strategy, which is designed to support global conservation efforts.

The film is written by Laura Dockrill and Michael Ryan and produced in collaboration with multiple European animation studios, including Able & Baker and Telegael. An international voice cast is led by Daryl McCormack and Mia McKenna-Bruce, with supporting roles from Anna Maxwell Martin, Paterson Joseph, Vincent Tong, Chris O’Dowd, and Mark Rylance.
