Across The Spider-Verse Across The Spider-Verse

Sony Pictures Animation is developing a standalone Spider-Punk animated feature, co-written by Daniel Kaluuya (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse) and Ajon Singh (Primetime).

According to a Deadline report, the project is still in the early stages, with story details under wraps and no official casting announced. However, given his performance as Hobie Brown in 2023’s Across the Spider-Verse, industry chatter suggests Kaluuya is likely to reprise the role.

Spider-Punk — created by writer Dan Slott and artist Olivier Coipel — comes from Earth-138, a world defined by its anti-establishment spirit. Hobie Brown is a punk-rock version of Spider-Man with a devil-may-care attitude that often results in him antagonising friends and foes alike. The character debuted in The Amazing Spider-Man #10 (2015) during Marvel’s Spider-Verse crossover event and has since become a breakout favorite among fans for his style, attitude, and sharp wit.

Kaluuya’s version of the character first appeared in Across the Spider-Verse, the second film in Sony’s breakout animated trilogy, where, like his comic book predecessor, Spider-Punk quickly won over moviegoers. In addition to standing out narratively, the character was animated differently from the other Spideys. While the other characters were animated at the same frame rate, different parts of Spider-Punk’s body had different frame rates, creating a completely unique look.

Character designer Jesús Alonso Iglesias told us about Hobies’ aesthetic origins last year, explaining that he based the character’s aesthetic on “classic London punks, with the suspenders, the fabrics they used, big boots, and the t-shirts they wore.”

The Spider-Punk film adds to Sony’s growing animated Spider-Verse slate, which has become one of the most celebrated comic book adaptations of the past decade. It also arrives as Sony continues to build out its broader Spider-Man universe across multiple formats. In addition to Beyond the Spider-Verse, the studio is preparing the live-action Brand New Day for July 31, 2026, and the Nicolas Cage-led Spider-Noir series for MGM+ in 2026.

No release date for the Spider-Punk film has been announced, but it’s like a long way off, given the franchise’s history of long delays and shifting release dates. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, originally meant to come out in 2024, was recently pushed back to June 25, 2027.
