Sony Pictures Animation is developing a new animated Venom film, putting Marvel’s long-running anti-hero into a feature animation lead role for the first time.

Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, the filmmaking duo behind the upcoming Final Destination: Bloodlines, are on board to direct. The project is still in early development, and no writer has been announced, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony is in the process of assembling a writers’ room to begin shaping the story.

Lipovsky and Stein have primarily worked in live action, and the Venom project marks their first animated feature. Details about the film’s animation style, production pipeline, or target release window (theatrical or straight-to-TV/streaming) have not yet been revealed.

The film comes after Sony’s successful live-action Venom trilogy, which starred Tom Hardy as journalist Eddie Brock and the alien symbiote. The three films, released between 2018 and 2024, collectively grossed nearly $2 billion worldwide. Hardy, who also served as a producer on the later installments, is expected to be involved in the animated film in some capacity, though it is not yet known whether he will reprise the role as a voice actor.

Producers associated with the live-action franchise, including Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach, are also expected to remain attached to the animated project. Kelly Marcel, who wrote and directed Venom: The Last Dance, is similarly reported to be involved.

The move reflects Sony Pictures Animation’s continued investment in animated superhero features, following the success of its Spider-Verse films. No additional creative talent, voice cast, or release timing has been announced.
