The Wild Robot The Wild Robot

Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for Dreamworks Animation’s upcoming cg animated feature The Wild Robot from How to Train Your Dragon and Lilo & Stitch director Chris Sanders.

The film is an adaptation of Peter Brown’s bestselling illustrated book of the same name, which its publishers describe as “Wall-E meets [Newbery Honor-winning novel] Hatchet.”

Here’s what we know about The Wild Robot:

  • The Wild Robot is written and directed by three-time Oscar nominee Chris Sanders (How to Train Your Dragon, The Croods, Lilo & Stitch) and is produced by Jeff Hermann (The Boss Baby 2: Family Business; co-producer, Kung Fu Panda franchise). When the film was announced last September, Sanders’ frequent co-director Dean DeBlois was attached as an executive producer, but he was not listed in the information accompanying today’s trailer.
  • Raymond Zibach (Kung Fu Panda franchise) is handling production design of Wild Robot, and Heidi Jo Gilbert (Puss in Boots: The Last Wish) serves as head of story. Mary Blee (The Boss Baby: Family Business) is the film’s editor.
  • Synopsis: “The epic adventure follows the journey of a robot—ROZZUM unit 7134, “Roz” for short — that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings, gradually building relationships with the animals on the island and becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling.”
  • Brown’s The Wild Robot, an illustrated middle-grade novel published in 2016, was a New York Times bestseller that inspired a trilogy that includes The Wild Robot Escapes and The Wild Robot Protects.
  • The film features a high-profile voice-acting cast, including Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Catherine O’Hara, Bill Nighy, Kit Connor, Stephanie Hsu, Mark Hamill, Matt Berry, and Ving Rhames.
